At 25 years old I noticed a lump in my left breast. I quickly went to a doctor that thought it was simply a cyst.

Surgery to remove the cyst was scheduled a couple weeks later.

The 20 minute Surgery ended up taking 4 hours as the lump was found not to be a simple cyst. Biopsy confirmed breast cancer and chemo started right away after the lumpectomy.

I can't stress enough how important self exams are. My noticing the lump saved my life. I have been cancer free since 1989

Of all the docs I went to for the obvious reasons, when the gynecomastia was mentioned none wanted to examine let alone recommend or suggest BSE.
It was an NP that followed through.
The importance of this should not be lost on us. The 1% chances for males is a bit low I think. The gynecomastia we have elevates this risk. For me it has become even more important as the genetic testing reveals a CHEK 2 mutation that puts one in the 20-40% breast cancer risk category.
I would not have guessed my risk left to my own devices.
Regards, Bob

Funny, when I was first sent for a Mammogram  to diagnose gynecomastia the LPN asked me if I had been shown how to do a BSE. I had not. Nor had my GP even discussed this.  Well the LPN was very nice and gave me the lecture and got me to do one right then and there.
Experiences may vary.
