Best massaging technique

I got my stitches out on Monday and the Dr. wasn't in the office. The young CNA girl took out the stitches and sent me on my way.

A day later, she called me apologizing saying that she forgot the my Dr. had asked her to instruct me to start massaging the area. She didn't seem to know anything else. I asked her how often and she said twice a day, once in the morning and once at night but it was obvious she was totally guessing. I asked her how to massage and she didn't really have a clue.

I've read on here of people doing circular motions starting at one end going to the other. Is this the best way? How often should I do it?
