Can Scar Tissue Lumps Flatten 4.5 Months Post Gynecomastia Surgery + Bodytite?

Hi everyone,

I went for gynecomastia surgery approximate 4.5 months ago (excision + bodytite). My left side is generally healing very well, however my right side has a large lump outside of the areola. When massaging I can feel the hard bands. I am curious can this resolve with time as the scar tissue matures or would this need a steroid injection?

Would appreciate feedback from the forum!

Please provide some before and after photos.

Realize that we are limited here in that we do not know how much gland was preserved or not and whether what you are viewing is residual gland or perhaps scar tissue.

Best to give yourself 4-6 months to heal and then return to your surgeon to discuss any remaining issues.

Hi Dr. Jacobs,

Attached is a photo at 4.5 months post op. I unfortunately don't have a photo in the same animation pre-op. The left side is completely flat whereas the right side has this lump ridge. The tissue has gotten much softer over the last few months, before it felt like firm bands and now it is a soft mass. It doesn't seem like residual gland because, it was present immediately after surgery (right side was flat), it doesn't have the same consistency and isn't around the areola area. 

I haven't had any steroid injections yet.

Usually, scar tissue develops (if at all) directly under the areola.  It is rare that it occurs further away from the areola -- but nothing is impossible.  It is impossible to tell just by feel alone whether you have scar tissue or residual gland.

Best advice is to return to your surgeon for follow up.  He knows what transpired during surgery and may have some insights as to how to proceed.  Gland does not respond to steroid injections -- but scar tissue might.

Thanks Dr. Jacobs, in the event it is scar tissue is it possible that it could subside on its own? Or is a steroid injection imminent?

Would not rush into steroid injections -- they are strong medications.  Scar tissue may soften over time but the bulk may remain.  Obviously, if breast tissue remains, it will not change.

If it is scar tissue it can resolve over time but steroids are also helpful in the situation if the doctor feels it is appropriate.  It will improve as long as it is not leftover glandular tissue. Good luck

I went for an ultrasound and it is showing inflammation/fluid collection and it has gone down in the last week. Hoping with some physio, massaging and lymphatic drainage it will continue to resolve.

There is definitely some scar tissue underneath the skin but above the lump. How long is typical to see final results?
