Thank you, it has been a great honor to have been chosen to be included in America's Top Doctors - by Castle Connolly. Getting it for a single year is prestigious, having been awarded now 7 years in a row is mind boggling. There is a link on my page to learn how doctors are chosen for this award.

Yes, I am pleased and honored to have been among the Castle-Connolly Top Doctors since 2001.

"Top Doctors" are nominated by their peers -- other doctors who are familiar with and recognize the work of the "Top Docs."  It is not political and you cannot "buy into it."

I am also pleased to have been included in New York Magazine's "Best Doctors."

Recognition by one's colleagues is perhaps the best compliment that can be bestowed on a physician.

"The doctors whose listings are included in Castle Connolly's Top Doctor listings were selected after peer nomination, extensive research and careful review and screening by our doctor-directed research team."  This is therefore an award of our peers in American Medicine.

Castle Connolly edits several different guides. They have:

• America's Top Doctors
• America's Top Doctors For Cancer
• Top Doctors: Chicago Metro Area  You need to have your practice in the Chicago Metro region to be listed.
• Top Doctors: New York Metro Area  You need to have your practice in the New York Metro region to be listed.

By Year: Each year they publish these guides. Who is in each new year's guide, can vary. Just because you get in once, does not mean you are still a "Top Doctor."  Once you get listed any year, online at least, you remain in their database. How or why doctors are not continued in a current guide is not something they discuss. Doctors that are in the current year, have a star published by their name. 

You can purchase the book form of the America's Top Doctors - by Castle Connolly guide. You can search the Castle Connolly Top Doctor site online. However unless you pay their fee $25 / year or $35 for 2 years, you are restricted to the sponsored listings for your search.

"Hospitals participating in Castle Connolly's Partnership For Excellence, a print and online sponsored advertorial program, are underwriting your ability to search doctors for free and identify nearly 5,300 Castle Connolly top doctors affiliated with their hospitals. The doctor listings in this program represent approximately 20-25% of the total, nation-wide Castle Connolly database of 20,000+ outstanding doctors that would be available for you to search if you join as a Premium Member available online. This 20-25% of America's top doctors is not evenly distributed across the nation."

Once you find an actual doctor in this database, it can be a little confusing just which year(s) they have been so honored. Instead of years, the online version only has a little icon for each of the guides that doctor was awarded.

Plastic Surgeons: There are currently only 163 Plastic Surgeon in the entire United States so selected.  (For all years, the total number of plastic surgeons is 613, some were included for some years and not others). 

Virginia: The total for 2008 for Virginia Plastic Surgeons is 3 (9 all years included). 

Gynecomastia: Gynecomastia again I am the only one included in the current guide.  Over all of the years, a total of 4 surgeons have been listed.

I also find the guide useful for searching for other specialists who are tops in their fields, such as Endocrinologists.  However, their free search is limited to a subset of their total doctor listing.

Here is an update:

The new online version just went active for 2010 and the 9th edition of the guide for Top Doctors in America by Castle Connolly.

Those doctors listed in the current guide have a star by their names.

Plastic Surgeons: There are currently only 191 Plastic Surgeon in the entire United States so selected.  (For all years, the total number of plastic surgeons is 624, some were included for some years and not others). 

Virginia: The total for 2009 for Virginia Plastic Surgeons is 3 (9 all years included). 

Gynecomastia: Gynecomastia again I am the only one included in the current guide.  Over all of the years, a total of 4 surgeons have been listed and now there is an endocrinologist who specializes in Gynecomastia.
