For other parts of the body placing an ice pack on a bruise is usually recommended.
What about for post gynecomastia surgery when bruising occurs. Would an ice pack be a good idea to minimize bruising?
thanx

As a general rule, application of ice packs to a surgical site  will help minimize bruising and swelling for about the first 24 hours.  After that, the ice doesn't help much.  After gynecomastia surgery, between the dressings and the vest, there's not much chance of getting the surgical site very cool.

I recommend using some ice for the first 24 hours or so, though, as Dr. Pope points out, the dressing may limit how much you can cool the area down.  By the same token, the vest will help to control swelling and bruising as well.

I don't use iced compresses -- the cold will not penetrate through the dressings and compression garment.

Rather, firm, continuous compression will go a long way to minimize swelling and bruising post op.

I would check with your surgeon but I do recommend ice packs after surgery to minimize bruising and swelling.
