a question for the docs. If any of you had a son with gynecomastia would you encourage them to have the operation if the condition bothered them?

Hell yes.

I myself developed gyne as a teen and was teased unmercifully.  It was miserable.
Certainly, would give it two years to disappear spontaneously -- but if it remained and it bothered the young man, then most definitely the surgery can be a life-changing experience.
