After surgery, how long till I can...

After surgery, how long till I can lift weights again, especially bench press?  If I stop bench pressing for over 1 month or even earlier I loose so much stregnth even though it takes me 5 months to put the weight (lifting) what I lost back on to my bench.

My PS gave me the go-ahead to start lifting again at 3 weeks.
