I want to get my hormone levels checked and start think about possibly getting surgery, but I still don't know what different test results can mean in terms of the possibility of recurrence?  What are the different causes of gyne that can lead to recurrence, and what are the causes that won't?  And how do you know which is the cause of your gyne?

Also, what are the ways I can go about getting my hormone levels checked?  Do I need to make an appointment with an endocrinologist?

This is worth viewing;

http://www.gynecomastia.org/smf/index.php/topic,8308.0.html

A typical endocrine appointment includes a physical examination, taking your medical history, discussing any isues of ill health with you and then taking bloods.

The following would be a starting point;

LH
Testosterone free if possible if not total testosterone
SHBG
Estradiol
Prolactin
TSH

Over and above that

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT- if Propecia or finasteride based med is used- or generally if possible)
Cortisol

Further tests would only be warranted on the basis of certain results above or something that stems from the examination, case history or symptoms etc.

All pathology needs to be taken between 9 and 11 am.

The outcome of the above investigations should tell you the cause of the gynecomastia, whether it is deemd to be pubertal/idiopathic or of known origin.

If you tell me where you live in terms of city and state I might be able to help you with relevant contact detals for an endocrinologist.

Thanks.  That would be great if you could help me find somebody in my area.  I live in Madison, WI.  Big hospital town so I imagine there's gotta be somebody.

The best I could do was get contact details of endocrinologists in that area that state an interest in reproductive endocrinology as I don't know any guys near you who could offer a personal recommendation.

Is reproductive endocrinology just the same as endocrinology, or is it something different?

Also, is this a one-time thing or would I need to go back for a second appointment?  I ask because I occasionally go to Chicago, which would be a chance to see someone around chicago if I didn't have to go multiple times.  Speaking of which, would you be able to provide a list of people in Chicago? :)

Reproductive endocrinologists are endocrinologists interested in reproductive issues and hormones.  Gynecomastia is caused by hormones being out of balance either via puberty (the majority of cases) or through an underlying and more permanent imbalance (sizeable minority).  It is better to see someone interested and experineced in this area than a regular endocrinologist who maybe deals with diabetes or pituitary surgery etc.

Other doctors who are sometimes very good in this area call themselves andrologists.

Anywhere forgetting that.

You say you go to Chicago on trips...

Could you get yourself to Michigan off the back of one of those trips?

If you could you could go and see a highly rated/top US hormones specialist who comes personally recommended by quite a few guys I know.

One appointment might be all it takes.

In any case you now have a range of options as to who to see and where to go.

  • destined to stand on a beach shirtless
* a man is more than a body will ever tell
* if it screws up your life the same, is there really any such thing as "mild" gyne?
