How important is the healing process towards final result?

I was wondering why being careful during the healing process is so important. I understand it can cause swelling - but doesn't that invariably go away eventually? Anyway I'm asking this because I'm 9 days post op and my healing process has being going excellently...until today an elevator door shut on me. It didn't exert loads of pressure on me or anything, but my left side has felt about twice as painful since then. Just as I was recovering, I now have some limited arm movement on that side without causing pain.

Can anyone reassure me that this won't screw up my results??
