I believe that as a patient, it is important to know the details of such tests.

The more you know in laymans terms, the more empowered you are and the more you are involved in your own health issues.

Go back to your doctor and ask what was specifically tested?

and

What specifically were the results, as in the figures?

Then post them here.

I WONT offer medical advise, but I can tell you if they have performed the tests that an endcrinologist would an they are the experts.

If they haven't performed the right test, you should request a referal to an endocrinologist who can.

Keeping things in proportion, most of the time people don't have problems and testing is simply good medical practice in ruling such problems out and pease of mind prior to surgery.

However, I was tested by doctors for 13 years until refered to an endocrinologist,  they did the correct test that showed a hormone problem.  Whilst I am in the minority that minority is still significant.

So its just about ruling things out and knowing that if you do have surgery it wont come back.

gruff, as its original poster, you should be able to see a "remove" icon to the upper right on the message.   see if it's there (take a copy first for use elsewhere if needed).

  • Why Meeee!!
Well spotted Gruff.  a point on that note, and i quote

"Sometimes blood tests to measure hormone levels may be necessary to determine the cause of gynecomastia. In most cases, however, a physical examination and medical history of the patient is sufficient."

What that says to me is:
that sometimes bloods tests are just used to find out what causes gyne,  so i take it thats if your interested in knowing whether it was a hormonal problem or not.

Hmm ive started to view this in the sense that if hormones did cause gyne at a early age thru puberty  which is the case for most people, as long as the gyn has stopped growing, i.e in its stable state surgery is the best option.  however surgery shouldnt be recommended if the gyne is still growing @ the time, as the imbalanced hormones could bring the gyne back after surgery.

however could gyne reoccur due to a hormonal imbalance even after the breasts have totally stopped growing and surgery has taken place???  which is what hypo normally goes on about

However endocrologists and P.Surgeons like Dr. Bermant and many others however do a physical examination and medical history of the patient which is sufficient  8)

Thats all my P.S did was a physical examination which is what some endos would do to determine gyne.
July 04 - Gland removal + liposuction- Adriaan Grobbelaar. Results: Terrible
Feb 05 - Lipo Revision- Alex Karidis.
Nov 05 - Gland + Lipo- Alex Karidis.

Gruff

The Endocrinology Society is just one organization in the world of endocrinology, albeit an important one.  There opinion on tackling the problem is different from other equally eminent scources.

The opinion they advocate, is just part of the gamut of medical opinions taken up by endocrinologists in a constantly evolving science worldwide.

The only differance of opinion being advocated by the endocrinology society and other eminent scources, which I happen to agree with is;

The endocrinology society supports blood testing some of the time and I and my sources support it most of the time.

I shall provide my sources after the weekend, although this part of the issue is something you have blown out of proportion.

THE REAL ISSUE IS!!!!!!!

YOUR ARTICLE IS ALREADY A WORLD AWAY FROM YOUR PREVIOUS POSITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote from your scource

Diagnosis: Endocrinologists are doctors with specialized training in recognizing and treating hormone-related illnesses and conditions. Sometimes blood tests to measure hormone levels may be necessary to determine the cause of gynecomastia. In most cases, however, a physical examination and medical history of the patient is sufficient.

So diagnosis by an endocrinologist, something I have been advocating all along and that you have been at complete odds with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU HAVE ARGUED ABOUT THE NEED FOR ENDOCRINOLOGISTS gruff

What is the worst case scenario people would be in from following my advice, even if you concur with the Endocrinology Society (as opposed to equally other eminent scources).

You will have gone to an endocrinologist...and got the best advice/diagnosis/treatment.

Following your previous advice, you would not have been diagnosed and had you had an underlying problem would therefore have been far more negatively affected!!!!!!!!!

As for Dr Bermant.  HE IS STILL NOT AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST GRUFF!!!!!!!!

I would be interested to know if he performed a scrotal examination of his patients prior to surgery???

Dogred??? anyone???

Also I have never been critical of him regarding his surgical expertise.

THE FACT IS NOBODY WAS EVEN TALKING ABOUT ENDOCRINOLOGISTS OR THE NEED TO SEE THEM BEFORE I STARTED POSTING.

So providing information and trying to take the moral highground when the article you have found is in almost complete concurance with my position and at complete odds with your own previous position is ridiculous!!!!!

So I shall provide the information after the weekend as stated.

In the meantime and hence forth, does this mean you will now be supporting/advocating the referal to endocrinologists gruff.

If it does that's great and will really help people with the forum.

Like I said all along Endocrinologist first, Plastic surgeon second.

The only differeance of opinion I have which other endocrinologists advocate is pathology testing in all circustances as opposed to some.

You know I can produce the information from expert scources:) You know that:)

I have NO interest whatsoever in a negative ongoing debate.

I say pathology investigation most of the time (as do my sources) the endocrinology society say testing some of the time from endocrinologists.

You say tomarto I say to-matto

Mere detail.

Join me in the call for people to be refered to endocrinologists prior to any plastic surgery?

Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will not attack you in any way, steroids issue etc ever again, back me here!!

Let's drop the me and you and concentrate on the who we can help

Truce for the sake of awareness

this seems awfully straightforward to me.  you're not answering his point about bermant, because the point is he would not have to be an endo in order to make an assessment.  he may be familiar with the subject and make referrals, but it all pivots around the fact tests are not mandatory in all cases.  i for my part i see no difficulty in that.

Head,

The point is that the information relates to endocrinologists not other doctors

What is the role of the endocrinologist? SEE THIS BIT!!!

So you want us to go around and around in a dogmatic and divisive disagreement.

Gruff you don't give a stuff for patient awareness, your concern is in winning arguments irrespective of the subject matter

You use a source selectively for your own benefit and then dismiss it when it doesn't suit.

That source quote

What is the role of the endocrinologist?  HELLO??????

Diagnosis: Endocrinologists are doctors with specialized training in recognizing and treating hormone-related illnesses and conditions. Sometimes blood tests to measure hormone levels may be necessary to determine the cause of gynecomastia. In most cases, however, a physical examination and medical history of the patient is sufficient.

They are saying that the role of endocrinologists are there to diagnose.

With regard to one hormone condition, low testosterone, I quote the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist guidelines 2002.

The recognition, evaluation of hypogonadism in the male patient are often overlooked by the physician.

Endocrinologists are the experts!!!!

Not your local QUACK!!!!!!!

Diagnosis of patients via examination and blood work (just for you..in some cases) should be done by the endocrinologist.

I am going to continue the call for awareness on this and you can do whatever you like, I am tired of going round in circles with you.

Hypo,

As I said this is a "cutt'em off" forum.
Facts are not needed or wanted.

I sometimes think some of these attacks are from shills for the plastic surgeons.

One attacker says he has Gyne but can not afford surgery, yet he goes to the tropic islands each year for vacation.

Plastic Surgeons are for the ego fo the patient, not the health of the patient, that is why they are not covered by insurance.  You tell them what you want done & they do it.

gine2d, i'm going to pull out the troll disinfectant here just a minute, though you make me go through the stuff rather faster than should be necessary.  i'm also going to assume the following was intended to refer to me, as would certainly be consistent with your conduct to date:

Quote
I sometimes think some of these attacks are from shills for the plastic surgeons.  One attacker says he has Gyne but can not afford surgery, yet he goes to the tropic islands each year for vacation.

1.  i never "attacked" the guy, i respectfully pointed out what looked like a shortcoming in his argument, -- and when he made it, i appreciatively accepted his correction in silence.  now of course dishonest paranoiacs like you view all differing views as "attack", so pointing that out is probably wasted on you (again)

2.  i made reference to such a trip recently.  if you indeed refer to me, you again reveal yourself for the utterly shameless pathological liar you are.
    a.  your "annual" claim is an unabashed lie made up completely out of thin air by you.  it was the first and only time i have ever been to a tropical island in my life.
    b.  i did not even pay for the ticket. a family member bought it for me as a kindness in the aftermath of the death of my ex-girlfriend.  i also had difficulty not spending most of the time wishing gyne had never prevented me from marrying her and taking her there years before.  not that you would understand, you unbelievably lame-a** and insistently pathetic excuse for a human being.

i see you have also never learned anything from my many laborious explanations of the distinction between respectfully differing views, and being the shamelessly irreformable, perverse, lying troll you have always been before and will probably always be in future.

if you're so stubbornly delusional as not to grasp the distinction, you should do us all a favor and not come back.  then you can make up stuff to people less wise than us (like all those outrageous fictions you concocted about me over on yahoo) about how it's just your poor innocent opinions doing you in instead of your dishonesty and deluded sociopathic misconduct.

oh, and btw, the rest of your post is of about the same caliber of argument.

gine2d, you are probably the single most outrageous liar to have ever posted on this board.  how's that for something to be "proud" of for the rest of your life?  it's almost a shame that honest, decent americans had to die on 9/11 instead of you, isn't it?  i know it'd be asking a h*ll of a lot from you, but try doing them some tiny honor by aiming for honesty in future.  but that won't stop me from suggesting that unlike better-intentioned recent nominees, your unbroken pattern of many deceits DO make YOU an excellent candidate for ban.

ok, point taken.  i guess if simon ever did ban the guy, though, it would maybe give him one more thing to file under "why".

I know this is off topic, but is there any way we can get this post to not be a sticky one?  I'm really tired of it always being at the top even though the much loved hypo is gone.

Anyone out there been cured of Gyne by the use of hormones alone?  Or is surgery the only way out?

hormones may be able to help if you're in the golden window where it's first developing, but once it's past maybe 2-3 years out, it's pretty much surgery.
