Unexperienced surgeon ... (?)

Hi,

I live on a small island in the caribbean. There is only one plastic surgeon on the island. He is a member of the Dutch Federation of Plastic Surgeons (Netherlands, Europe).

I have had a consult with him. He has done about 20 gynecomastia surgeries. So, this is not his specialty. He has done hundreds of breast implants surgeries for women.

I saw before and after pics of his surgeries. They look allright.

My question:

If I take into considerations that he has done hundreds of breast implants operations, which is a more complex procedure than the gynecomastia surgery, and that the before and after pics he showed me look allright, is there a considerable risk that he will not perform my surgery accordingly?

Gyne surgery is complex!  Implant is simple!  Think about it!  If you like to gamble, have him do it!

Each surgeon has their own skills, methods, and experience.  Some prefer to stay local with a less experienced surgeon.   We see many Gynecomastia Patients from the Caribbean and around the world who prefer my techniques.  Unfortunately surgery is better done right the first time, revisions can be more difficult or reasonable options may not be available.

If travelling to the USA, after how many days do you recommend flying back home? Is 8-10 days after surgery enough?

Most of my patients trying to minimize travel to Richmond, start with my Preliminary Remote Discussion where I can evaluate patients to set up a tentative surgery.  Patients are then examined by the day before the surgery.  They have the surgery and are then seen the next day (except for Saturday operations who are checked on that Monday.)  Many of our patients can return home after that examination. Then depending on the complexity of the problem, we have an in office dressing removal 6 days after surgery.  The other option is a telephone remote dressing removal with the patient about 10 days after surgery. 

Therefore, the minimum stay for our typical gynecomastia patients is 3 days and 7 days for more complex problems.  Those staying in Richmond usually turn their time into a vacation taking in the region Richmond Virginia / Washington D.C which offers quite a bit to do.

if your case is similar to the ones in the pics and you'd be satisfied with those results, then you'd probably be okay.  i assume he knows at least enough gyne technique to minimize and hide scars etc.  if your case is more involved, then you'd consider alternatives.
