Mastectomy usually refers to the removal of a breast, sometimes pectoral muscle and sometimes lymph nodes.  This is usually for the treatment of cancer.

I have never see 'mastectomy' as a term used in male chest reduction/sculptor procedures for the removal of gynaecomastia!  So please don't confuse the procedures and don't worry!

As for excision - this refers to the removal of offending glandular or breast tissue.  It's indication for removal very much depends on the surgeon.  Some don't remove it (but it seems that these patients are often the most unhappy with the result post-surgery).  Some remove some of the tissue to try and keep a 'normal' contour of the chest area, whilst others aim to remove as much as possible (as mine did - and I am very happy with the result).

Hope that helps.
