Hey I am hoping to get a response from a doctor about a post-op situation.  I am planning on getting the surgery in the fall, but have a concern about recovery.  I have obstructive sleep apnea, meaning when I lay on my back to sleep (or a lazy boy, or any other position other than face down), my airway gets blocked.  I wake up the second I fall asleep due to my throat relaxing and blocking my air.

I know that it is important to lay on your back after the surgery to avoid complications, but it just isn't a reality for me.  This problem is keeping me from fully making a decision to get the surgery and put this whole mess behind me.

Is there anything that a doctor would advise to help me?

By the way:  I am not in the least bit over-weight.  This is a problem that is apparently genetic.  My dad says he hasn't been able to sleep on his back since he was about 20.

After surgery, it is really important for you to sleep on your back.  If the sleep apnea is a problem, then that should be addressed first.  There are machines (called CPAP -- Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) which can be very helpful. You should consult a sleep specialist to discuss the issues.

Gyne surgery is elective surgery -- it can be done at any time.  It is important that you be in optimal shape -- both before and after surgery -- to help get the very best possible outcome.
