Can you take fmla after surgery to recover before going back to worK? Would it be approved

I doubt it qualifies as a "serious health condition."  But check with your employer.

Yes you can take FMLA for anything. All you need is a doctor to sign off. By law the employers is not allowed to have detail due to hipaa law.
