I always ask my patients if they smoke.  Surprisingly, many many men do not smoke at all!  Some others are just "social smokers" (a cigarette once in a while during a meal or with friends). I have not done a statistical determination of how many men smoke, however.

Of those who do smoke, I ask them to quit for two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.  And then, if they haven't cheated, they will have gone a month without smoking -- and therefore are close to having quit entirely.
