Title: Bra Shopping With My Wife
Post by: MychalBloodwing on September 16, 2021, 04:46:02 PM
Yesterday morning, my wife half-heartedly took me bra-shopping at Khol’s. As we entered the women’s section of the store, she became my “personal shopper” and asked me what types of bras I was looking for. She steered me away from any styles with molded or firm cups, which left me with looking at wireless bras with no forms. BUT this is a giant step from her “no bras on my husband” stance.

As this was an exploratory trip to gather sample sizes to see what fit me, I settled on six bras of various styles: 4 Bali wireless bras (sizes XL and 2XL) and 2 Playtex underwire minimizer bras (40C and 42DD). I choose the Playtex bras because they were the only ones with underwires close to my size (40DD), and also because they were different from my target size of 40DD. My wife advised me to not get more than those 6 as she expected that she would be returning them all and the management frowned on customers who keep returning items. Interestingly, she liked one Bali bra with adjustable back hooks that I choose and decided to get one for herself in pink!

At home, I privately tried on my six bras and settled on the two XL Bali bras: one pullover (Nude) and the other (Black) with adjustable back hooks. (See pictures: without and with bras on.) As a test to see how obvious the bras appeared under my shirts, I wore those two for several hours during the day: the nude pullover while eating lunch at the kitchen table with my wife and the black one while walking around the house for several hours in the afternoon. My wife never mentioned a word…no weird looks from her.

This morning, I wore my nude pullover to the pain doctor’s appointment (my wife driving, as I was going to get a steroid injection for my carpal tunnel syndrome wrist condition).

When we got home, she asked if I had tried on the bras and if I had made any decisions. I told her that I had and that I was wearing one. She was completely surprised! I told her about the three times I’d worn them under my shirts and she admitted that she hadn’t noticed anything unusual in my appearance. She said, “Let me see!” So I unbuttoned and took off my shirt and showed how I filled the XL Bali…she wears Bali in a size L.

So, she admits I was right about what I need, but she still doesn’t feel comfortable with me wanting to try underwired bras (too much like I’m transitioning, NOT)…Well, two steps forward.

She is coming around.  Seems like she acknowledges you have breasts and need to wear a bra. Just a matter of which bras she thinks you need.

BTW, you look great in those  bras

Both bras look good on you, especially the nude colored one.  You definitely fill your bra cups :)

you look good but imo you need underwire but it is a start

You look appropriate in a bra. Those look a bit more stealthy as they could pass for an undershirt if ever seen or felt. Although I have a few like that for the express purpose of stealth around some closer groups of people who are more likely to give a pat on the back, I much prefer the fit and feel of standard cup type bra.

Just my personal opinion, but I think underwires are for "advanced users".  I wore pullovers almost exclusively for a couple of years.  Once I got more comfortable and realized nobody was noticing the bra, I got the confidence to wear the underwires in public.  They do gather up the underarm boob and add almost a cup size, but eventually you get used to them and kind of quit caring if anybody notices you have breasts.  Now I find it kind of amusing when I catch women staring at my chest and trying to decide if they are seeing what they think they see.  You should definitely try an underwire but the hooks and strap adjusters are usually going to show through your shirt.  You may be surprised at how large a cup you fill when you stuff the side boob into it.

Probably because I'd done a bit of reading on the subject before I bought my first brassiere I chose an underwire bra with my first purchase.  Although I don't generally wear a bra all day long I have today and it has been a bit of a revelation as well as a bit of a distraction.  I understand that if one is wearing a brassiere every day it becomes second nature, but for me it simply drew my own attention to my breasts which seem quite substantial in the Lilyette Bali minimizer cups.  Because I'm much too shy to go for a fitting, finding the right brassiere has been an adventure, usually played out on E-Bay.  I love this bra but while the C cups work fine, the 42" band isn't big enough for my chest.  The solution... an extender, but that pushed the straps out so far they kept sliding off my shoulders.  The solution... a strap connecting the two straps so they can't move.  At first that seemed absurdly awkward, but eventually I found a way.  Now, the brassiere fits like a glove... no binding, no discomfort... just two very prominent breasts now filling the front of my cotton turtleneck.  Perhaps my fixation with the size of these breasts will diminish.  Time will tell.  But I love how the underwire cups pull everything together.  Underwire is definitely the way to go.

42CSurprise, the revelation is a well fitting bra. With the right fit you gain all the benefits of the support while essentially forgetting you even have a bra on for much of the day. I don't think most women are acutely aware of their bra during the days activities. Most of us are more likely to be aware of not wearing a bra.

The struggle is real! It's 100% true. I have worn a bra daily for over 30 years now. I'm not talking about the struggle of wearing a bra to manage our breasts. That part, I find is easy. I'm well beyond hiding the outline of my bra. I'm talking about fit issues that anyone who wears a bra out of need of comfort, support and shape of their breasts.

I had Friday off and I was in need of a couple of new bras. I went to a local boutique that specializes in bra fitting. They have a wonderful selection of bras in dozens of brands and sizes. I was sized and as I suspected was was 36H UK. Emily, my fitter brought in a dozen bras to start with. She helped me with adjusting the straps and with my permission, she made sure that I was fully scooped up in the cups.  To make a long story short. I tried on at least 30 bras that day. I finally settled on an Elomi Charley lace in black and and Elomi Bijou in a nude color both in a 36H UK.

I didn't necessarily need to be fitted, as I already new my size in a brand that I have worn for years. However, different models can and will fit differently depending on your shape. My biggest issue is my size. Most stores don't carry an H cup UK which is a J cup in  US sizing.

When you do find a bra that truly fits, it makes it very much worth the effort.

Hi! I thought I'd poke my head in and tell y'all that tomorrow I'm going to our local Dillard's Department store for a bra fitting...with my wife! She agreed that I needed to be comfortable, and didn't realize I've been wearing my wire free bras. She also agrees that women's mock turtleneck shirts and women's long sleeve polo shirts fit me better than men's shirts. I'm going to Dillard's for underwired bras, and I'll report what happens.

Good for you!  Your wife has had a little time to adjust to you needing and wearing.  The fact is clear your going to find comfort and relief.  Working together, trying on there will be a nice.  Walking away with bras that both agree will work for you.  Nice.

I am more particular and more difficult to find a bra that fits. More often than not, it's my wife that comes bra shopping with me. I'm the one in the changing room trying on bras and seeing if she likes how I look. Last time she went along with me, I must have tried on 30 different bras while she waited patiently for me to model them for her. She was a little frustrated when I decided on buying the first two bras I tried on.

You need the last 28 bras to confirm that the first two were the best.

 Aboywithgirls,
Your wife is a Saint!  I don't know if I would have the patience to try that many on.  I would have to say it would be nice to have that option to check the fit of so many different bras.

I went for my first bra fitting at Dillard’s with my wife. It took an hour with an extremely friendly couple of female Sales Assistants, helping me discover my true size which is 38D/40C (not the 38DDD as estimated by A Bra That Fits calculator). I felt that the Wacoal Retro Chic was my best fit. It was the only one that gave me the side support I needed to corral all my underarm breast tissue. I also discovered that I like the feeling of lace.

I’m happy with it as a first underwire bra and has me looking to get a balconette bra as my second one…I realize that I don’t totally fill the upper part of the cups because I’m full-on-top, so I need less upper coverage in my bras. So, in this case I’m looking at getting an Elomi Charley Stretch Lace in a 38D.

You can see the difference the bra makes. Due to the shaping of the bra, you appear to have less projection. Without the bra, it's obvious something is happening under your top. With the bra, it's much harder to discern what is happening. Most people wouldn't even give you a second glance. I find this to be true for myself as well. I have several Wacoal bras and just love them for what they do to my bust.

Yes, it's the corralling of my under arm tissue in with the rest my breast tissue, lifting and projecting it all together that gives me a fit appearance.

Wearing a bra under your top, you have a polished, nicely shaped presentation, whereas braless is more suggestive, with your nipples poking through your top in the shape of your breasts clearly visible. I bet you jiggle a lot  braless, also, which can look quite provocative.

Thank you! Yes, I jiggle a lot when braless. FYI, I'm wearing a Lands End women's long sleeve polo shirt. I'm a size 18 in women's shirts and blouses, which fit me perfectly; so, I'm gradually replacing my old worn out men's with women's.

Update! This morning, I tried on my wife's Charter Club Lexington Straight Leg Jeans...size 10S! ("S" is for short inseam)
It's the first time that jeans have comfortably hugged my lower torso and legs.
I don't know what it says about me....other than I guess I can shop totally in a women's section?

If the jeans fit that's great.  Wear what fits your body and you!

What did the two extremely friendly sales associates think of fitting a man for a bra?  What did they say when they measured you as a C or D cup?

How does your wife feel about you wearing lace bras and who suggested a balconet?   BTW, I agree with what you said about the right cup styles for you.

And the bra pix look nice and you look way more put together with a bra under your women’s top

Thank you for the compliments, bustymale. 😃

The first SA I approached for help was young and looked at me suspiciously (what’s a man wanting to be fitted?) until I explained my gynecomastia condition; her eyes opened wide and was immediately sympathetic/friendly and went to get an older more experienced SA. From that point on it was a very pleasant interaction. They were happy to have something interesting to do.😃

I already was certain of my band size (I wore my Bali XL bralette). My uncertainty was my cup size (I use the A Bra That Fits calculator which has me as a 38E), but we all realized that I was smaller than that.

I knew Dillard’s uses the Wacoal Retro Chic lace bra to normally gauge women’s breast shapes and then try other styles. So, we went back to the dressing rooms with a 38E…officially, I am NOT a 38E!

So, they came back to the dressing room with B and C 38s, but I surprised the ladies by spilling out of those cups (all the while we joked and had a good time). After the first 15 minutes, the younger SA left to handle shoppers out on the floor, while the older SA kept finding other styles for me to try. All in all, it took us a full hour to find my fit. We tried balconette bras, but the ones in stock didn’t have the side support I need for my underarm tissue.

Finally, I thought the 38D Wacoal was the one (really love the feeling of lace), but it was a bit too tight (Wacoal’s bands run small). So, I decided to sister size up to a 38C.

Regarding my wife: she only cares that I be comfortable (but not too girly).

It was aboywithgirls who recognized that I’m full-on-bottom, and suggested I try Elomi’s Charley Stretch Plunge bra (I'll have to try it in a 38D...it doesn't come in a 40C).

I was just banned from the Reddit subgroup A Bra That Fits for posting the exact same story. I was accused of being transphobic by titling the post: "What can you expect at your first fitting as AMAB?" and referring to myself as a man. And then my post was removed even tho it received 46 up ticks in less than 30 minutes...and then I'm banned for 14 days.

I can't stand gender-politics...so, I decided to let it go and went shopping on Amazon and ordered an Elomi Charley Plunge Bra.

On a positive note, today my wife suggested I buy some women's pants. I have problems with men's sizing. After measuring me, she had me try on some of her jeans to see if they fit me. These were the very ones I tried on in secret a few days ago....and she was startled to see that I fit into her smallest size...which are too small for HER today. Officially I'm a size 10/12 Petite. Reluctantly, she agreed that I needed to shop in the women's aisle. So, I ordered a pair of black Starfish Mid Rise Straight Leg Pants from Lands End (which were on sale today 50% off).

Thank you. (I have a very flat bum. ;))
At lunch today, my wife smiled and almost laughed when she said, "You've almost got a full woman's wardrobe including bras." For practical purposes, with tighter pants I'll have to change styles from my men's boxers.

Wow.. So I am glad that I am not alone on that.

I started to keep track of my hips also and have noticed the same process of change where I see my hips fluctuating in size by small amounts but getting progressively wider.

This tells me that the hormone thing defiantly affects the fat placement by the body, and if estragon is involved, expect the shape that comes with it.

Hi, taxmapper. If you're referring to my hips (in my pictures), I've always had wider than normal hips...I'm not on any hormones. My structure has always been a bit of an "hourglass" type.

Well for me the hormones seem to be screaming upward.
I have been measuring them out and have increased by one inch in the past two months.
I also realized that my pelvis is shallower than other males.
I am glad it is working for you, as I am having to discover this myself.    My father called me "panty waist" when I was barely a teenager, and had a gym coach cream at me telling me that I walked like a girl.

So not being the physiological expert, I can only guess.

Sounds like your wife just sees you as having a more female shape overall and now second nature to her that, since you have a body more like a woman, women’s clothing feels and looks best on you.  Just not things that are not too feminine looking, yet.
