I had the surgery a few months ago and it's a godsend being free from that monstrosity. I currently have bronchitis and was prescribed prednisone as an anti-inflammatory. My doctor said it's a steroid. I am terrified of taking it, because I know steroids can cause gynecomastia. I also read this paper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21817886 which terrified me even more.
What should I do? Is it safe to take, and is there a substitute drug that could help me?

Short term treatment with prednisone does not cause gynecomastia -- period.  Anabolic steroids, such as testosterone, will cause gynceomastia.

This can be a common source of confusion because of the general term "steroid," which doesn't differentiate between corticosteroids, such as prednisone, which don't typically cause gynecomastia, and anabolic steroids, which are testosterone or testosterone-like agents, and these can cause it.
