Swelling after surgery

Is there anything that helps swelling go down faster?  Or do you just have to give it time??

1) don't do too much physical activity, i noticed swelling after doing just about everything imediately after surgery
2) i think cold shower/bath is beneficial
 
3) wear a compression garment as often as possible (recommended 24-7) while your still swollen or for 2 weeks at least.
