Hey I had gynecomastia excision + lipo on Friday the 13th (yeah haha) and unfortunately developed a hematoma. I had it surgically removed the following Wednesday (my PS wanted to wait it out but I requested it to be surgically removed). It is now Sunday the 22nd and have noticed that I have a really large bump where the hematoma was "removed". What I am wondering now is that if this is normal. Am I meant to have this lump even after the blood was surgically removed? Do I need to get surgery again to get rid of this lump?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will be in contact with my PS in the following week.

Thanks!

First, if the hematoma was large, then it was the right thing to remove it as early as possible.

It is not unusual for there to be a firm lump surrounding the area of the hematoma.  That is actually blood which has seeped into the surrounding tissues and which cannot be removed.  The only blood that can be removed in the blood within the open cavity (which was where your tissue was removed).

It may take a bit of time but the lump should soften and eventually disappear.  Best to check with your surgeon about this -- he knows exactly what was done and can answer the question better.

Thanks a lot Dr Jacobs!
Just one more quick question.... will I be able to work out even if the lump is still there, or will this be detrimental to the healing process? I'm hoping i'll be able to start up again in about 2 weeks.

You should address that question directly to your surgeon -- he knows you best.

With regards to hematoma drainage I always tell patients there is a substantial possibility that you will require re-drainage or a small recurrence will occur which may be observed. Also the drainage causes swelling of the tissue adjacent to the drainage.
