Well I went and did it, had my first mammogram. I saw my doctor for my semiannual check up and I asked him about getting a mammogram. I explained that lately I have noticed some enlargement and a sore spot deep in my left breast. He did a manual exam and said that it might be a good idea to get them checked out. The day of my scheduled exam I was as nervous as a cat at a bird show. Came time for me to go to the mammogram room the technician had me go directly to the mammogram room and not the changing room and asked that I take off my shirt ( Ho boy I had a bra on, my wife knows that I wear a bra but hasn’t expressed a desire to see me shirtless with it on). Technician didn’t, bat an eyelash and waited as I bared my chest with breasts. Positioned me for the horizontal view ( didn't know that you could spread breast tissue that much ouch)! Next was the angled view, more moving and positioning of the breast.. She had read the doctors referral and asked me about the tender spot..She told me that she thought that I should get a sonogram of the left side but had to call for approval, and if she got an OK they could do it right away, but in the mean time to get dressed and go back to the waiting room. About 15 minutes she came and got me for the sonogram and this time took me first to a small changing room to remove my shirt and bra. This time I had two technicians doing the sonogram one was student from the local medical school and the other the staff technician.
I have to say that at all times I was treated with respect and I did not get any feeling of ridicule or disrespect. If any thing I might have sensed empathy. In all after the deed was done, no big deal and not to worry what people might think. I have noticed since I started to wear a bra that 99% of the people are too wrapped up in their own thought's to noticed my breasts.
Just a little background I am 78 years old calendar wise but still in my 50-60's. I lived with slow growing breasts since puberty, now at a 48D and have accepted them.
