Hello, guys. I developed gynecomastia when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I'm currently 21 years old (still have them), & I was curious to know if there could be any underlying problems that could have caused me to develop breasts at such an early age? Are there any known diseases that could cause this? I recall going to a few different doctors at that age, & most said that there wasn't anything particularly wrong with me, but I also don't remember having too many tests done. Just your typical physical examinations & maybe some blood tests, but I can't say that I remember having blood drawn, for certain. I was really young. Anywho, I'd just like to hear your opinions.

What you are describing, in general, is what a huge number of guys experience.  There are no diseases at that age which cause gyne.  There are some rumors that early exposure to tea tree oil or lavender can stimulate gyne growth -- but no proof yet exists.  Monitoring your hormone levels during puberty will probably be fruitless.

In essence, you have what we term idiopathic gynecomastia (which means we just don't know the cause) and it is probably genetically determined.

Since you have had it for over ten years, you should assume it will not disappear on its own.  Your next choices would be to camouflage it by wearing compression garments or consider surgery with an expert in gyne surgery.

Good luck either way.

Most cases like yours are idiopathic gynecomastia. The translation is we do not know the cause of the gynecomastia. However your question  " Are there any known diseases that could cause this?' the answer is yes. There are a number of causes for gynecomastia. Some of the causes are congenital and some are acquired.

Although your gynecomastia started a bit early it sounds like it is the most common form. A more thorough history and physical might turn something else up but I doubt it. You might try seeing an endocrinologist to get bloodwork if you are still concerned.
