I'm 25 years old, and I've had Gynecomastia pre-puberty. Although I can probably write a book about the difficulties and mental pain this condition has caused me, I think a lot of you already understand how it is. To my understanding, a great portion of the cost comes from the general anesthesia/stay at hospital. I wanted to see if it's common or possible to have the procedure done with just local anesthesia. I know there might be excruciating pain, especially with the extent of my case, but I'm willing to go through it... hell, I'd even go through it without any anesthesia... ok maybe not. So I currently made plans (it's not 100% yet) to get the procedure done in Mexico and I was told it will be preformed under local anesthesia. It would all come to $2.5k. I know many are against the idea of medical tourism and I'm anxious about it myself... I know I'll tolerate the pain, but I don't know if it's possible to preform the entire procedure under just local anesthesia. I've been putting this off for 5 years now, and it does't seem like it's ever going to happen.

I've gained ~10 lbs during winter because I was indoor most of the time.

I have a number of military patients ,seals, marines, special forces who have had the procedure under local only. I typically start an iv and perform the procedure using iv sedation.

If you have a very small amount of excess tissue under the areola, then local anesthesia would be possible.  If you have a larger amount of gyne, then I find doing it under local anesthesia with IV sedation offers the best results.

I understand that cost is a factor and that you are willing to have excruciating pain in order to have the operation.  Understand that this is truly painful surgery and when one has pain, it is difficult if not impossible to keep still.  Just imagine that the surgeon is now confronted with a patient who is moving while he is trying to do surgery -- it becomes a real challenge.  And oftentimes, the results are sub-optimal.  And if the surgery doesn't turn out well, then you will face revision surgery, additional cost and the prospect that you will never have a perfect or near perfect result.

My best recommendation:  save your money, go to a local American gyne expert and get it done right the first time.
