Hi Everyone,
Today I got the call from Dr. Haugrud office to let me know my surgery in on July 10th. I am very excited for the operation to come along. I was starting to get worried that no-one was going to call. So when the office called I was so happy to here "July 10th".
So If anyone would like to give me more advice on what I should be doing before the operation, I would appraciate it.

Glad to hear you got in with Haugrud this summer as well.

I'm going in with him on the 19th of June, so I will be able to answer any questions you may come up with in the next few weeks.

All I can suggest right now, is to workout seriously, eat healthy and try to get in as good shape as possible in the next month.  The less fat you have in your chest, the easier it will be for him to take correct amount of gland out, as well as it will cut back on bruising/recovery time.

Thank G.B.
I am getting very excited. I am not even worried about the operation being done, not even scared. Its just going to suck travelling home the day after the operation. I live about 3 hours away, I just dont want to travel back a week later to get my drains taken out.

My time is drawing near and near. I was wondering if anyone knows a good, cheap hotel that is close to the hospital that my wife and daughter can stay at. I looked online for rates and it is quiet expensive. So any help would be appreciated.

Hey Shattered_Nyte, glad to hear your time is coming up as well.  My surgery is in 3 days so I'm pretty excited about that as well, and I'll try to post anything I learn that may help you.  In regards to hotels, the Rockyview hospital where the surgery is done unfortunetly isnt really close to any.  It is just off of glenmore trail, and kind of off any major routes or central locations where hotels would be plentyful.

To make matters a bit more challenging for you, your surgery is around the same time as the annual Calgary stampede, so you will find not only a lack of selection of hotel rooms, but jacked up rates and a overcrowded city.  My suggestion would be get on finding and reserving a room asap as vacanccy during the stampede in any decent place is brutal.  In my opinion, your best bet for decent rates for hotels would be on McLoud trail which is about a 10 min taxi ride to the Rockyview.  Mcloud (sp?) trail will have all the franchise hotels your familiar with like holiday inn, best western etc as well as a few no name ones and smaller motels.

I'm going to post a question looking for a good/cheap hotel near the Rockyview hospital on a popular/high traffic local forum that I am a member of and I'll see if I can get any better responses that may help you out as well.  Feel free to ask me any other questions you have I might be able to clear up as I am born/raised in Calgary and know the city very well.

hey Shattered_Nyte, here is what I found out:

- Most the big Hotels in Calgary have been booked for months due to the Calgary Stampede, and most likely you will experience jacked up rates if you have not made a reservation yet.
- If you are still looking for a hotel/motel your best bet would be to look south of the hospital. Then you/your wife will be driving along 14 St, avoiding the traffic/construction/horrible delays regularily found on both Glenmore & Macleod.
- Someone specifically recomended this Motel near the Rockyview:
         Super 8 Motel-Shawnessy
         60 Shawville Road SE
         Calgary, AB T2Y 3S6
        (403) 254-8878

It's a little further south than you're looking..but it will be probably the cheapest. We stayed there while our house was being painted.
Its about a 15 minute drive from there to Rockyview. It has a great pool and slide for any kids.

- Someone else who works for the Calgary Health Region, mentioned this and it may be the best idea.  Call the Rockyview hospital ahead of time and mention you are coming in from out of town for a surgery.  A lot of Calgary hospitals have deals worked out with nearby hotels and will give you discounts due to your reasoning.  In fact if you go to the Rockeyview and ask them, they should provide you with a coupon to stay discounted at a nearby hotel (I would suggest calling first in case you go all the way down there and they cannot provide one)

- So thats what I came up with, I'll be going in myself tommorow, and post updates when I get the chance.

Good Luck

Sorry about the long wait on the reply, I've been out of it the past few days.

Anyways, I had the surgery on Tuesday.  The treatment I got at the Rockyview day surgery unit was great, the nurses treated me like I was the only one there and there was always someone checking up on me to see if I needed anything or if they could make me more comfortable.  Dr. Haugrud has a great rep with the nurses and everyone seems to love him.  Instead of a orderly carting me around, Dr. Haugrud came and got me and pushed me part of the way, while he answered any last questions, and seemed to be trying to get me as relaxed as possible (the Nurses told me Dr. Haugrud is the only surgeon you will ever come across who carts his patients around like this).  The surgery itself was just over a hour, the hardest part being for me waking up as I was having breathing problems and I threw up a bit.  When I was ready to go home, they gave me a bunch of percocets and a prescription for t3s.  Also I was orignially supposed to have drains put in after surgery on tues and taken out on Thurs, but for some reason at the hospital, after a final pre-exam, Dr. Haugrud determined it would be better to leave them in until Monday (tomm) to get them removed.

With the drains put in, it is almost impossible to take care of yourself, and for me at least, I needed constant care from my Mom the first few days.  Percocets every 4 hours type deal.  The pain isnt too bad, just the occasional shooting pain that went away after a few days.  Showering is a bitch with drains in, but you get used to it ( I put a plastic outdoor type chair in the shower stall to make life easier).

For the first few days I was wrapped up and couldnt see anything, but when the wrap came off, despite the swelling, brusiing etc, my chest clearly had the normal look people like us have only dreamed about.  I am overall really happy, it looks like all the gland was taken out and some fat must have been taken out as I have defintion and shape that I never had before in my chest.  The only concern I have now is I have slightly indented nipples and some loose skin, but that is supposed to tighten up and go away in the next few months (given the size of the glands I had and how much they stretched the skin this was expected.  I will get a better view once the drains come out tommorow and will update on here.  The pain hasnt been too bad at all, with the worst part being having to lie on my back in bed watching daytime tv for almost a week with drains taped to my sides.

I think I got most of it, if there is any more questions I would be more than glad to answer them.  The hardest part now for me will be waiting 6 months before taking my shirt off in the sun as to prevent darkening the scars.

the "scars" would be a pinhole sized mark on either end of the chest where the drain tubes come out, and where they make the actual incision along the bottom of the nipple.  Both should be gone within 6 months and no I'm not posting pictures on the internet.
