hi, im 19 and i started getting gynecomastia about 3 months ago. i am 5'10'' and 150 pounds, with not very much fat on me.  what happened first was i started getting soreness under my nipples and then they became pretty swollen and hard, with some firmer tissue forming underneath. pretty painful too. anyway, im really hoping it will resolve itself in a few months, i got a blood test and everything was fine.

so here are my questions if you guys would be so kind as to answer.

is it uncommon for someone my age to have just a passing phase of gynecomastia? i know its common for boys going thru puberty but i went thru puberty a long time ago (with no gynecomastia) so whats going on? should i be worried that its going to be this serious and painful for a while?

ive read online that pot smoking is a cause of gynecomastia, but ive also read that this is untrue and just some anti smoking propaganda with no legitmate scientific findings to back it up. i admit i have been hitting the weed pretty hard lately. do u guys know anything about this connection?

also ive bee taking a dietary supplement called 'mega men' that contains many vitamins and antioxidants, stuff like that, could something like this maybe cause it?

i also read that certain oils and cosmetic products such as lavender may cause this, and i used lavender shampoo for about 6 months before my gynecomastia started.

thanks so much

do u really think so even at 19? i mean im hopeful because i started developing it on the right side of my chest about 3 months ago, it swelled up and hurt pretty bad but now it doesnt really hurt anymore even tho some tissue still remains. but now,  my left side is just as bad as my right side used to be, its really painful, but maybe it just has to run its course?

so anyway have  you heard of people having a 'let it run its course' case of gyno even at 19?

  • Had expensive surgery... Now I'm flat busted!
The three things you mentioned are debated here pretty regularly.  The hottest topic and probably the most polarizing is smoking pot.  I've read both sides too, and you read extreme views on both sides of the fence.  The people against pot will post that it's the greatest evil in the world, while the people who like smoking a lot of pot will post that it's just a political ploy to take away their fun.  I have begun to fall into the middle ground, though, and believe that some things can contribute to gyne in some people, but not in others.  For example, if someone is right on the edge of getting gyne because of hormones or whatever, then smoking a lot of pot may give just enough of an imbalance of estrogen/testosterone to kick off the gyne.  Somebody else may smoke twice that amount of pot and never have gyne.   There are a lot of things at play here and nobody can really say what "caused" it.  Likewise, there's no way to say that one or more of the things you mentioned didn't contribute to your gyne.

Here's the positive note:
Since your gyne only started a few months ago, if something you're doing is contributing to it and you stop doing it, then it's possible that your gyne will go away on its own.  Was your blood test done by an endocrinologist?  If not, then you may want to go to one and really check out your hormones.  If you've got a chance of correcting a hormone problem in time to reverse the gyne, then you'd possibly save yourself a lot of problems later in your life.

hey i just have a couple more questions if u would be so kind

when developing gynecomastia is it the same for everyone? meaning does everyones glands hurt really bad as the gyne is forming?

do u think the painful glands mean its just a phase?

my one gland swelled up real bad but has gone down considerably, does this mean it has a chance of going away completely? will the firm tissue around the gland go away too or is that now permanent?

remember im slim, 19, and this just started happening to me about 3 months ago. thanks
