Renovo’s lead drug candidate for the prevention and reduction of scarring, Juvista, is a therapeutic application of human recombinant Transforming Growth Factor β3 (TGFβ3). TGFβ3 is present at high levels in developing embryonic skin and in embryonic wounds that heal with no scar, but by contrast, is present at low levels in adult wounds that scar.

Clinical trials in volunteers have demonstrated that exogenous application of Juvista to wounds created either by surgical incision or excision, at or shortly after the time of surgery results in markedly improved subsequent scar appearance in the skin.

In the majority of clinical procedures the wound margins are approximated by sutures, staples, steristrips or glue. Juvista can be applied by intradermal injection to the wound margins before surgery or after they have been closed. In skin graft donor sites, which are larger open wounds, Juvista has been applied both by intradermal injection and by topical application below an occlusive dressing.

An interesting discussion on this: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php?showtopic=157005&st=20

One of the posters makes a great point in saying that "...Treating current scars with the prevention drug would just involve excising the scar tissue, injecting the drug into the skin and then stitching it up again."

For major scarring that would be great.
