Although I have read only few of the threads in this wonderful site, I came only across 1 or 2 complicated case.

It is great to hear and see successful cases, but what about those who are not so lucky, do you want to share your thoghts, worries and /or plans.

If you have an extreme case of gyno or complicated/unsuccessful treament please add your experience here.

I had 3 surgeries up to now for gyne, all because the 1st one was a disaster. 1994 mastectomy (Liverpool UK)left 2 big concavities. 1997 (Liverpool UK) insertion of implants to fill the gaps. 2005 (cairo Egypt) removal of implants and formation of an adipose flap.
Most likely in 6 months I will have one more surgery (liposuction) to improve appearance.

Graham, considering that the damage gyne does is purely mental, would you not agree that results are as good as they are believed to be by the patient?

If they have surgery and they believe their results are good (even if in fact they're not), then the gyne has lost its hold. Surely this is the true measure of a "good result", as really that's what we hope for when we go for surgery?

Yes, I agree. In fact, some are even able to come to terms with it without having to get surgery - which would be preferable, especially if it's mainly in the mind for them. Unfortunately, there are also others who aren't satisfied with surgery and need to repeat the process again (and maybe even again) until their mind is at ease. It's a complicated thing - I guess whatever works for you.

I'm not disputing any of that. I was just under the impression that you were implying that "people who don't really have that good results (but) believe that they do" is any argument against surgery.

I would say that gyno is 70-80 percent mental and 20-30 percent actually issues from other people. Your mind makes it alot worse then it really is sometimes but I cant control that.

The feelings of shame, inadequacy and embarassment are all "in the mind" too.  Surgery patients frequently have different expectations and satisfaction with results is tied more closely to expectations than outcome, principally because success of outcome is more or less a subjective conclusion.  

In my case my left nipple still has a slight fold in it after 5 weeks.  Some people might freak out and already be planning the revision.  I (and my doc) feel that it's caused by the newly formed scar tissue and should resolve as the scar softens over the next year, so I couldn't care less right now.  I'm very satisfied whereas a person with different expectations (or experience, I've had my share of lacerations plus one abdominal surgery) might be bumming out.

Case in point: boob jobs.  According to one study I Googled breast augmentation surgery has a 97% satisfaction rate, while at the same time having a 17% complication rate.  Both are highs for cosmetic surgery.  Because of the overlap there must be a fair number of women who have complications yet are still satisfied with their breast augmentation.  I think the disparity is remedied by the idea that these women have their expectations about surgery met, despite complications and are happy with an improvement even if it's not "perfection".

Was your surgery at the St. James Hospital?  I think a friend of mine who lives in Liverpool had his surgery there.  Just curious.

No. actually it was in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, under prof. leinster who was the head of breast surgery.

Look, I understand and accept all the points mentioned above, but I also believe that we as members of this forum and particularly the seniors and the ones with medical background should be more honest and open about our cases and suggestions for others. this doesn't mean that you tell someone "oooh ....your boobs look like a cow breasts....you look like a b***h...you are f*****d" no, it means you help him bring his fears, worries out and listen to appropriate suggestions which may not necessarily be what he wants to hear, but at least you were honest with him.
