Tattoo to cover scars

How long should one wait after surgery to tattoo long and vertical surgery scars? Also, if one should choose to do a revision, will the tattoo get ruined as a result?

If you are planning to have any type of revision, it would probably include revision (excision) of the scars.  That would distort any tattoo that one would have.

Best to complete the revision, then give the new scars about a year and make sure you are satisfied with all the contours, etc.  then get a tattoo.

I think you should allow your result to fully mature prior to tattoo.It would be a shame to have to remove a portion of the tattoo if you need to revise something.I am not sure what you had done in that extensive scars are very unusual.Also you should be aware that scars are difficult to tattoo in that they absorb the pigment poorly.
