Included in my surgery was 6 sessions of ultrasonic massage, which I understand is supposed to help with scar tissue. I'm just curious -- how effective is this type of therapy?

I instruct patients to massage the chest area after surgery to help with resolution of swelling and to break up scar, and I find this to be useful. I have no strong feelings about use of ultrasonic massage--probably overkill in most cases, but it might be useful in cases where there's significant scar tissue.  If the treatments are included, your surgeon obviously finds the treatments useful, so I would suggest following his or her recommendation.
