I'm not German, but studied it in high school and was stationed in Germany twice.
Once upon a time my fluency was 'ausgezeichnet', but Ich hab' viel vergessen'.

Hi Moobzie,
every language which is not in use will fade away sooner or later. My aunt married a man from France shortly after WW2 and moved with him to this country. There she became ill and after some years had to live in a nursing home. But the complete staff only spoke French. After two decades she had almost completely forgotten her native language but spoke French fluently.
For the long time you didn't speak it, your German is quite good.
Where have you been in Germany?
