Marijuana, Yes. Presumably because of its action on the fat cells and the resulting conversion of testosterone to estrogen compounds.

Alcohol, Yes. I actually has a double whammy in that it affects both the liver and is toxic to the testes.

Many vegetables contain Phyto-Estrogens, But their strength is so low that they could generally be ignored.

Many produce ranches use feed that is loaded with hormones, But the better ones do not. Read the label, It should say "Hormone Free."

Someone writes in every once in a while and asks about dairy products. The answer is: Don't worry. A high Estrogen level in a dairy animal is bad news as it suppresses lactation and reduces output. There is not enough Estrogen in milk or other Dairy products to be worried about.

A diet that is high in processed sugars and/or fats that would result in generalized obesity is bad news for many reasons. Obesity is sometimes a major factor in Gynecomastia.

Guys

I found out that Lipoma could cause Gynecomastia.

And that the gynecomastia itself could be lipoma and not gynecomastia, and its just a small operation ( non surgeical ) to remove it by liposunction.

A momogram would show if it is Lipoma or Gynecomastia

There is much in the eco press about male fish showing signs of feminisation due to polutants. I eat lots of fish, cos I like it.

Anyone have a handle on that one ?

Hey everyone,

Ive been following the boards for a little bit as I developed my gyne about 1 yr ago.  I am 20 and have been desperate to get rid of my puffy nipples.  Ill try anything.  I am currently trying andractim which hasnt had much effect and now im gonna try and cut chicken and caffine from my diet and see what happens.  Pretty much all I eat is chicken so i guess ill give it a try. I dont know the cause of my gyne, i havent been on any PH or steroids and they just developed when I was 19.  Any thoughts of anything else i can try before surgery?

were you taking any medicines? any anti-depressants or anti-epileptic?
I would say stop the chicken and give it a shot.
but anyway, go to an endocrinologist and he will do u a blood test to see the testosterone/estrogen levels.

That link peddels the ignorant outdated notion regarding the causes of gynecomastia.

It says quote
In rare cases, gynecomastia is caused by prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, illegal drugs, tumors or disease.
Unquote

Plain wrong and outdated infrormation that pervades.

29% of all those with gynecomastia have an underlying causative condition and 10-20% of all those with gynecomastia typically have the condition because of drug related side effects (medicated or otherwise) that are responsible for causing the condition.

Here are the relative frequencies of causative conditions for gynecomastia in a typical group of 100 men.  As detailed by Glen D Braustein in his 1993 white paper entitled Gynecomastia and corroborated by by ismail and Baths 2002 white paper “The Endocrinology of Gynecomastia”.

Cirrhosis/Liver problems 8%
Primary Hypogonadism 8%
Testicular Tumor 3%
Secondary Hypogondism 2%
Hyperthyroidism 1%
Renal Disease 1%
Others 6% (this is the title as they are many causes that add up to less than 1% each)

Total 29%

I think the relative frequencies of medications/drugs (medicated ortherwise) causing gynecomastia per 100 men was 10-20 %

This means that underlying conditions and medications/drugs again in typical frequencies cause between 39 and 49% of all cases of gynecomastia.

So NOT actually rare at all.

When looking at what causes gynecomastia, consider ANY and ALL medications first before you start looking at food and get an endcorine evaluation so you can sensibly rule out any causative underlying condition.

Alcohol is one factor that most notably stands out, if you consider it a food  ::)

This is because alcohol greatly increases estradiol and lowers testosterone in the short term and in the long term (if moderate to heavy) often causes testicular dysfunction.

Caffeine highers the estrogen levels, so excessive amounts of coffee or soda could play a role in the enlargening of gynecomastia

Do you have a source on this? I know that caffeine is standard practice for most lifters, myself included.

My nipples feel like air pockets (really soft).

Does that mean they are fibrous?

Hypo,
sorry man if you got me wrong, but the man asked his question on april 16 and no one answered him!
and i did ask him if he was taking any medications.
Anyway,
anyone who has this ( like me too ), should do a blood test:
liver / renal
CBC
FSH and LH
Testosterone / Estradiol
SHBG
and Alpha Feto Proteine.
An X Ray / ultrasound on the breasts.
And Ultrasound on the testicles ( although that is not necessary if the Alpha feto proteine is normal)
If it all came back normal, then there is nothing to worry about, it's either from puberty or some food or medications.

This is a good list that covers quite a bit, but it is by no means exhaustative and by no means covers a whole host of conditions that cause gynecomastia.
