Differents between "Hospital" and private Specialist?

I have recently seen a specialist in RNSH (Royal North Shore Hospital) for my Gyno (Gynocomastia) problem.

Some facts.
- He acknowledged I have Gyno.
- He offered a procedure in Hospital (Medicare covers all the cost since he consider it's more than cosmatic reason, yes Free of Charge *but 6 to 12 months wait time*)
- He advised operation in the hospital may not be performed by doctors by rather those "doctors-to-be"

Other facts
- He is a registered Plastic Surgeon on www.plasticsurgery.org.au (hence has his own private room somewhere else)
- I have not asked the price but probably not less than $4500+
- Operation will be performed by him.

Question...
I would love to save the $4500+, but I am worried if operation from hospital is bad?  Anyone did their operation in Hospital and what were the outcomes? If I spend $4500+ for the specialist and perform the procedure in his private room, does that normally mean I will more-likely to have a better outcome?

PS!! One more question, I am in Sydney/Australia, is it common that hospitals accept Gyno as a real problem rather than just cosmatic and gives us Free-of-charge operations?

(I have just quit smoking for 2 weeks getting ready for this, planning to just quit it for life)

Any advise will be greatly appreciated....

In North America it is spelt 'Gynecomastia' and in the U.K. 'Gynaecomastia'.

GRS is a very 'technically demanding' procedure (Re Dr. Lista: Video). Personally, I would not want medical students performing my GRS. But hey, it's your body dude. However, if you cannot afford $4500+, then having students work on you might be the best option for you. Have you considered a small personal loan?

Now you are talking about having your GRS performed by a qualified surgeon as compared to medical students and not just between a private clinic and hospital, correct? Having GRS in hospital does not mean that the end result will be bad (my surgery was done in hospital by a qualified PS and end result was satisfactory). It moreso depends on the person/persons performing the actual work and not where you have the procedure done. In my opinion, you would stand a better chance of acceptable end result if you had your surgery performed by a qualified surgeon. Just my .02.

Also, do not think that the more money you pay, ensures you of a better end result. You could pay alot more to an unqualified surgeon (who could quite possibly do a substandard job), than to a qualified surgeon who will do a much better job. Do your homework/research on the surgeon that you feel most comfortable with and make sure that he/she has good credentials. Cost of surgery, should be a secondary factor.

I think that you are confusing 'real problem' with 'medical necessity'. Many physical conditions that warrant corrective surgery that are deemed to be 'cosmetic/elective', are as important (to the sufferer) as is any physically 'medically necessary' surgery. The psychological pain resulting from a cosmetic condition can be, and is, very real. It's a shame that the insurance industry and public/private health care plans do not recognize this fact.

Thanks Jologs for your advice, that builds me some faith going with hospital! 
Bambu, I watched Dr. Lista's video last night. The video was well made and you certainly look good in it!   

About the cost, I would love to spend $5000~7000 if it significantly reduce the risk of Keloid Scars or any other side effect that  I am unsure of. (The licenced PS advised me there's a 30% chance of keloid scar happening... sounds scary... but hey, that's not gonna stop me from getting this D.O.N.E!)

Although I would go for a private surgeon, however, there's very limited Australian Doctors (Sydney) mentioned on the board, and the only one mentioned multiple times Dr. Hunt, seem to have some argument on his performance... hence, it really does not help me to choose either going with Hospital or Private Surgeon...

I am planning to see another different specialist for another consultation and see what he has to say, then hopefully that would help me to decide 'Hospital' or 'Private Surgeon'...  Are there much people that actually went for Hospital? cus most of them seem to go to a private surgeon... *which worries me...*

I spoke with Dr. John Kippen, and I am planning to select a different doctor in Sydney for another consultation, currently going through the list to select which one to go with...

well i have an appointment through a dr referral here in Sydney and he said i could wait in line or he can perform on me in 3 weeks for about $1,200. my dr i have had for yrs says he knows his shit and he is good so i think i might just go for it, once i talk to him and see how confident i am i will post up pre and post pics
