How do you check messages?

I'm pretty sure I haven't received a personal message yet, I do know how to send one. 

I'm guessing that by clicking on my own name it takes me to my page. Any messages should appear there?

Go into your forum profile look for the conversations tag and click on it. 
You will see a least 1(from me!)

I'm clicking on my name here, it takes me to my profile page. I don't see conversations

Forgot a stage. Forum profile, then profile info
If you are using a tablet conversations will not show until you are in portrait mode

I think from your screenshot that you are on wrong screen. 
Log in to the main forum login screen. Click on name there. From the drop down choose profile then profile information. Then just rotate tablet into landscape and you will see conversation
I use android as well.  You don't say whether you are using a tablet or phone. You will not get it on a phone - yet another quirk of the software.

go to https://forum.gynecomastia.org/index.php and login if you are not already logged in.

click on Forum profile to right of  Avatar

Conversations are the second item on the second horizontal broad solid blue line

I think you will find it OK

I have already steered Birdie down that path, problem is on android phone the tab does not exist and  only shows on android tablet if in portrait mode.
Birdie was using android phone. 
He should be OK on PC
