My 2 year old son.

Hello. My name is louise, and my son has one enlarged breast on the right hand side. We discovered this when he was only 8 months old. He did not have it when he was born. Since then he has been to specialists who have tested all his hormones as well as other tests. Three doctors so far havent been able to give us a straight answer, they have just described it as gynecomastia and right now my son is just getting check ups for observation. I have read other peoples posts and gynecomastia seems to only be common in boys aged 12 up. Do you have any answers to why my 2 year old son has developed it now, and only on one side.

One Sided or Unilateral Gynecomastia is quite common as breast enlargement in newborns and adolescence. However, at the age of 8 months to 2 years old, such growth is not typical and there almost always is some underlying cause. The problem is in finding it out. Options depend what specialists were seen and what tests were ordered. This can be a very difficult task best done by an experienced Endocrinologist who has a passion for discovering difficult problems. I have seen too many patients who had missed diagnosis from years of doctor evaluations that were not done well.

hey louise, Do you have an update on your son?

Hi, since our last visit to the specialist, he did mention that he needs to keep searching for an underlying cause. He examined the breast again and said that it did look like it was caused by hormones, as the nipple was enlarged and there are white specs around it. An ultrasound was done which I got to watch, his liver, kidneys, stomach, pancreas and chest were examined, you could see the difference between both sides of his chest, the enlarged side looked to me like dense thick tissue, which the doctor described as glandular. More blood tests have been takin, to test his hormones. Still no real answer. His next appointment is not till october. I told the doctor that I have been doing my own research. I think myself that there may be a chance it could go away like most cases of gynecomastia, and he didnt rule this out. Im hoping that with more research and tests we will eventually find the cause. the doctor also said that surgery should not be considered untill my son asks for it himself, which I think is fair.
