The "Ask a doctor" section should be renamed "Ask a cosmetic surgeon" since NO OTHER medical question gets answered.

I have seen a multitude of recommendations made in that section by the doctors here that they have told someone to go see someone else in the medical field who could help the person with the problem they have.

These doctors specialize in the field of cosmetic surgery and on this forum it has to do with gynecomastia! If they do other type of surgery is beyond my knowledge.

I've had serveral surgeries, non being cosmetic. I also have a host of other health problems including diabetes, now I would expect that these doctors have some training on the type of health problems I have and they may even have on the type surgeries (back and knee replacement) for a couple examples, however I would not expect them to give me expert advise on these types of issuse, general info yes, not specific advice!

I think that people expect to that one doctor can answer any medical question, but the truth is, the human body is very complex and for one person to be able to do it all is impossible! That is why we have doctors that specialize and become the best in their fields!

I for one thank God that we have these men and women that do dedicate their life to their specialty.

I agree with Hammer. These doctors are under no obligation and have very little to gain financially from answering random questions on these forums, yet they still take the time to share their knowledge for free. Yes, it's possible that one could persuade a patient to see them based on their visibility here, but I'd argue that's earned because the nature of their interaction here reveals something about their character. For example, in my observation, Dr. Jacobs doesn't only answer questions from potential patients in the NYC area, he appears to show equal concern for users from other parts of the world who are very unlikely to ever use his services.

I've seen some rhetoric around here about greedy fat cat surgeons praying on the desperate, and some cynicism is certainly understandable, and even healthy, given all the scams that are out there (I'm sure I'm not the only one who has fallen victim to some BS, like the worthless boob shrinking spray I once bought online), but not everyone is motivated by greed. The regular forum members who stick around to post pics and answer questions after they have surgery gain absolutely nothing financially; they do it to pay forward the generosity of those who shared with them. And my impression is that the doctors who post here genuinely care about men who suffer with gynecomastia, often because they once suffered from the condition themselves. If they also make a nice living off of their years of study, hard work and experience, good for them! Consider the going market rate for their time and knowledge and their generosity here is even more admirable.

But that's just the opinion of some guy on the Internet, take it as you wish.

I have no problem with the name of the section  or with any of the doctors who give of their time to reply to the same questions over and again.

There have been doctors in the past who tried to use the site to promote their own services but they have been blocked.

You are correct we are plastic and cosmetic surgeons  We are not medical doctors and gynecomastia is a multifactorial issue of which us plastic surgeons can not give you expert advise.  We really need to stick to what we now best.  We have a endocrinology section as to how to find one. This may be helpful and goes directly to their link.
