I've been using the The New Rules of Lifting by Cosgrove and Schuler.  So far it's been the best program I've tried.  I always went to the gym and sometimes did the "quick rip" programs.  This is kind of like a realistic approach to getting in shape for people having a hard time noticing changes (at least as I got older I noticed the changes weren't in my benefit).  I've burned fat and built muscle in areas I never noticed before.
It's a full blown book about having a "lifetime" exercise program...usually lasting about 52 weeks each program with some eating habit stuff.
I'll update later with some fat measurement progress.
