I need to get an operation and am currently looking at prices so I thought that establishing some sort of database here might be a good idea. The cheapest I have come up is Clinic Beaucare in Brussels. They are quoting £1550 (€2246) for gynecomastic surgery there:

http://www.kliniekbeaucare.com/belgium/prices.html#male_chest_reduction

Second is Elyzea in Brussels who quoted me £1750 (€2536) when I sent them pictures:

http://www.elyzea.co.uk/gb/price_gb.htm

€3400 (£2345) is the quote on this website here:

http://www.wellnesskliniek.com/E_prices.htm

Every place in Britain and Ireland seems to be far more expensive than Elyzea in Brussels (which, as its website shows, is much cheaper than even its own London clinic). In short, we are being ripped off. I'd imagine there are many cheaper places in Europe which are now very affordable to fly to with Ryanair so I'm definitely open to travelling.

Also, were you happy with your surgery? What were its pro and cons? Do you have any before and after pictures?

Thanks.

Cheaper not always better? What are the laws in the other countries, who are the doctors, what is their track record, what recourse do you have if something goes wrong? I'm not saying we shouldn't consider outside of the UK, especially as it seems they are charging far less than local prices (not sure why), but it's also worth thinking about worst case scenario and what you would/could do if not happy with the results, or someone does a botched job. What would be cool is if you could get some recommendations from this board where people have actually used services outside of the UK. It may be worth checking if there are any forums similar to this one specifically for mainland Europe. I would be interested in finding out for example if there's someone with as high a profile and good a reputation as Karidis but more affordable for example.

You pay your money you take your chance.

I personally found the extra money even though I wanted to get it done for half the price Karidis was charging for 1 simple reason...Karidis had such a quantifiable track record all over the internet, not just on this forum. So did that Yank Dr Bermant, those two seem to have lots of photos and positive stories / journals and people genuinely happy with their end result.

Remember if you are conscious about your chest anyway, then pray you don't get a cowboy job because you will live with that forever....spend a few hours on here, read some stories of people who have found these unknown great Dr's that offer electric pricing....and as you get further and further into their journals you sense more and more unease about the final result.

Sod that I thought....I don't fancy living life with another regret....I would much rather get ripped off an extra £2K then think for the next 30 years "if only I had found that extra £2K and got it done with a Dr that had loads of rave reviews and a track record of proven results"

If you find a corker in Europe for £2K with loads of great results that would satisfy you, then don't waste your money in the UK, go abroad.
I was happy being "ripped off" by Karidis and would do it all over again...best money I have ever spent.

Paying more in the UK doesn't always mean better. Take Belgium for example, they have a 0.5 per cent MRSA rate, UK has 10 Per Cent, the cosmetic surgery practice there is rigorously monitored, and to qualify as a plastic surgoen is a longer process than it is the UK, a lot of their surgeons are GMC/BAAPS qualified, and are on the current GMC specialist register. I've been doing alot of research having decided to have surgery and i'm happy to save about £2000 by going to the SingleBerg Clinic in Belgium, having first looked at Spire (BUPA) then Karadis, each to their own I guess, and as long as the job gets done safely and professionally.

Get some pictures / links up of his work Jim so others can see and consider him as another option before just jumping in with Karidis or Levick. The Dr you found is much cheaper then Karidis or Levick so it would be good if folks can see his work and his pricing as it will no doubt help others make a decision.
I have seen some good results from a few lads who have had the work done in Poland and the price is damn fair too, the only thing that I wasn't keen on was the drains and the way they do the lipo leaving the small scars on your chest....In the grand scheme of things they were petty things, but they played a role in my decision making personally

I would recommend those like me who are willing to try treatment abroad to check out SingleBergClinic.co.uk and also look up Dr Bert Oelbrandt UK GMC No: 6045645 (This doctor may work at any grade in the NHS including consultation) on the net. My completely unqualified opinion is that this gentleman looks more than qualifed in the field of Plastic Surgery. Obviously at any consultation you'd ask to see pics of work carried out amongst other things. I'll certainly be posting my pics up pre/post op, but it won't be until Mar 2012 as have to save money + that's when i have managed to get 2 weeks annual leave off from work, in the mean time am beasting myself with gym/cardio to get fat level down to around 12%.

I agree, if it can be done a more competitive rate by a professional with a good track record of the operation. This prompted me to do some online digging and see what his rep is like, and I guess if you search long and hard enough you will find negative stories just about anyone but wanted to highlight the following snippets of info I found as a way of generating a discussion.

I have had a consultation today (01/10/07) With Dr Oelbrandt/Elyzea. I was alarmed at how unprofessional he/they seemed. He seemed annoyed at the ammount of questions myself and my hubby were asking. The consultation took place in a bare room, with just a desk, his laptop and briefcase in it! when he examined me he cut up bits of paper and taped them over the glass panes in the door with surgical tape!!!!!! When i said that this seems a bit scarey and unprofessional he said well dont have it done then. Has anyone else had an experience like this with Elyzea/Dr Olebrandt. I have read nothing but good things about both and came home sooooo dissapointed and close to tears.

I have heard all good things about Elyzea and Olebrandt too. So was surprised when the consultation consited of him going on line and reading suff to me off the internet. Then he got annoyed because i wasnt told that I had to pay a 30 pound consultation fee so i hadnt taken any money with me, explained to him that when i booked no one mentioned the fee, he then asked me how i got by not having cash on me! i told him i had a card so he gave me his account number and sort code for me to trasfer the money to him on line!!!!!!
Where did your consultation take place, Euston Road?

Noted these are quite dated and hopefully things improved since then.

Yeah I've read a few of those from when he was at Elyzea, but he left them a long time ago, according to the internet because they were shite, so he now runs his own practice, much like the majority. There's not much point in me in searching for 'every' positive/negative views as i'm sure there's people out there who post negative things about certain surgeons.. even Dr Karadis has had his fair share and he's top draw by going off people's experiences on here. I personally don't care if the surgeon comes across as blunt. It's what they do on the surgery table that counts, and I noticed the negative comments didn't criticise his surgery skills which is interesting/good. If I had a spare £5000 laying about sure I'd prob go to London as I could justify it to the missus lol! Interestingly I got another email from Spire (Bupa) and they've come clean and said that the £3900 is just for Lipo, gland removal would be an extra cost, which would be disscussed with the surgeon at the consoltation...I haven't replied funny enough.
