I'll be removing my compression bandages Friday morning (god it doesn't seem like it's almost a week since the Op), an event onto which I will be approaching with caution. The FIRST thing I'll be doing after taking some pics is jumping in the shower for a "proper" wash.

I was wondering, is there any advice you guys could give, is it safe to wash, it won't become detached will it, will I be alright without my compression vest for 20 mins while I have a shower? All these questions are  going through my head more and more as the time approaches.

Will it be OK?

Thanks.

Yeah, you will be fine.... My compression bandages (after the sticky ones were taken off) were like a limp sarong tied around my chest for the first week, untill I found a much better way of doing it. I think I swelled up a bit. But that was about it. You can shower, but touching your chest is horrible... cause you can see yourself touching it... but you can't feel it! Urgh!

Get ready for the most pain of the intire procedure... taking off the damn bandages.... Sever pain.. I soaked in the bath for an hour before taking mine off... and they were still stuck fast.

Ian

p.s Told you to trim those armpit hairs! Why does noone listen!

Cheers mate, I feel better about the shower now.

If it's any consolation IT, I am now almost armpit hair free lol, although through necessity, not choice.....sniff  :'(

As for peeing, wasn't a problem for me. However I did make a point of drinking a *lot* of water as soon as I was awake. Poor nurses spent most of the night alternately bringing me jugs of water and, er, "receptacles".

I was dubious about a papier mache p1sspot I can tell you, but they don't leak and don't turn soggy after a few minutes as I expected them too.

Whimp! I just re-attached the drainage bottles to the belt hooks of some light canvas pants and went 'gun-slinger' style to the regular toilet!

Well guys, it’s Sunday and I’ve just gotten back after the op with Mr.Levick on Friday.

All regarding the op went swimmingly and was amazingly painless and hastle free.

I do realise that I’m only starting down the road re the healing, so I need to ground my expectations.

I’m in the process of typing up my diary and collating the pre and post op pics.

Thanks a million to everyone for their support and encouragement.

I'm exactly a week behind you ms, itching like crazy now too, which is a good sign.

Thankfully Mr.Levick put gauze under my bandages so you won't hear any screams coming from Dublin when I take them off this Friday - I'm very hirsute.

Can't believe how little you bruised from your 7-day post op pics, did you use Arnica?

I couldn't get hold of any Arnica irish, although I did try, but thinking about it I never really bruise at all. Even when I whack something or bang it, it never really bruises so maybe that's why I don't have much.

Ooohhh, that itching, I'm not sad to see the back of that fella, I had a Gauze under the chesty bit (thank god) aswell mate, but where the pain REALLY got me, was my back, about the last 2 inches of the bandage. I never realised how sensitive it was there, and how hairy!!

I'd love to see your pics when you've done em mate, almost having the op at the same time and all....and london_boy, I wonder how he went on.

Hi ms1972 & irish_dude

Thanks for wondering what became of me, well............

I was Levick'd on Wednesday and it wasn't exactly plain sailing as I had hoped. I arrived at the Priory at 12pm and as everyone has said in the past, the staff were absolutely great from start to finish. Didn't have to wait too long and after being given the once over and visited my Mr L and the anaethetist, I was taken down to the aneasthetic room at about 3pm and that was the last thing that I remember before waking up in the recovery room about 3 hours later.

All seemed to be going well, and after I was transferred back to my room, the pain was fairly minimal until a short while later when all that changed and the pain and swelling got much, much worse and I was told that I had a haematoma on the right side. Luckily because I was in fairly early for the op, Mr L was still at the hospital and they took me straight back to the operating room to give me a good flush out and stop the bleeding. So a few hours later I found myself back in the recovery room, having had my second operation and second anaesthetic in 3hrs !

A shortwhile later Mr L came in to see me to explain what he had done. Apparently, because I was pretty big (the biggest this year, so I'm told, 300 cc's of fat and 200 cc's of "gristle" out of each side) it is not uncommon for a haematoma to form post op as the cavity left behind is that much larger !

After a anaesthetic enhanced nights sleep, it was decided after a bout of vomiting and a fairly serious episode of fainting that I needed to stay in for a second night and the next 24hrs was a bit of a roller coaster. I was finally allowed to go home on Friday morning and now the road to recovery begins.......

I think that the fact that I had two op's and two anaesthetic's within a very short space of time has taken it's toll and even now, I'm still not feeling 100%.

When I arrived at the Priory on Wednesday lunchtime, I had been so worried about getting to that stage that I hadn't really thought about what would happen afterwards and  think I had convinced myself that it would all be easy and I'd be straight back to normal come the weekend.

Looking back on it, after all this, do I regret it ? Not a chance, over the past couple of days, for the first time in god knows how many years, I've happily walked around in public in a t-shirt without feeling in the least bit self conscious (although these bandages do make it look as though you've got a flak jacket on) and that was my ultimate goal. Yes, I'm looking forward to the day that I can run around on a beach and go swimming without worrying what people are thinking but until that day, I'll make the most of being happy with walking around with my top on !!

irish_dude, I'm in the same boat as you at the moment re the bandages, the itching, oooooh. I can't wait until Wednesday when the time comes to peel them off although I am slightly apprehensive about what it's going to look like underneath, given the haematoma, but if if looks half as good as ms1972's then I'll be exctatic !!!

Well that's me done, I'll give you an update on Wednesday post bandage removal !

I probably walked past your room early last Friday as I was checking in, I wondered where the moaning was coming from!

Seriously mate, well done. Two general anaesthetics in 24 hours is no laughing matter. If you don't mind me asking, what height, weight and age are you?

It just goes to show some of the problems that can occur. I hope the majority of us don't give people false expectations about the 'easiness' of the whole procedure. We're individuals after all and it's not an assembly line - problems can, do and will occur.

I know what you mean about walking around in a tee-shirt for the first time. I was so chuffed that I walked around Birmingham in a tee-shirt for about 2 hours in a happy daze the day after the op and ended up with considerable sunburn on my face and arms!

...and when I got back to the hotel, I sat on the bed for about five minutes, and then got up and did it all again!

Not at all, I'm 29, 5"11 3/4 (never quite cracked the 6 foot) and just under 13 stone, so I think pretty normal all in all........

I'm just glad it's all over now, as you say everyone's different and as with any surgical procedure there's always the risk that things won't go entirely according to plan and it's just my luck that they didn't but hey, hopefully I've put myself though something that's going to change my life and for that it's worth a bit of pain !!

I'll try and upload some pics as soon as the bandages come off and we can all compare notes, although I haven't any "before" shots as I could never bring myself to take any...........

Now which T-Shirt today ?? Hmmmmm..........

Hi Guys,
I find all your messages and stories extremely helpful and like so many before, it was reading your stories that finally gave me the courage to do something about it.
Hopefully come the 14th of September I can share my experiences too.

May I ask if you guys have bought compression vests? And if so which make and model did you go for?

Same here Tintin, just don't forget to help others after your op and recovery.

You'll get the details of the compression vests and where to get them from Mr.Levick's office.

On the subject of compression vests...
Mr Levick hands out a leaflet for 'Design Veronique' and recommends type 640. Which is like a vest with hook & eye fastenings up the front. These are sold mail order by euro surgical 01483 456007.

I ordered a large well in advance of my op, tried it on and thought it too tight. Sent it back.

Then I found out about underworks.com. They do a wide variety - 977 and 980 are popular. I ordered a model 980 in XL. It took along time to come but only cost £30. Tried that on the eve of my op. Too BIG!

I had been loosing weight in advance of my op, so I reordered a large  DV 640 from euro surgical (that's about £60). I am about 43" chest and it was the right size as you do need good compression.

I have found the best thing is to put the vest on, then peel the bottom half back up over the chest up to just under my armpits. This in effect gives double compression over your chest but leaves your stomach and diaphram free. Which I feel is more comfy and gives easier breathing.

Now 10 weeks post op I still wear the vest quite alot because I do get a lump of swelling under my left nipple. The compression of the vest gets rid of it. Before the op I thought i'd be out of the vest in 2 weeks but it doesn't bother me comfort wise and actually it alleviates my concern that something might bash into my chest (like an energetic child) which is still sensitive if not sore.  Not sure when I'd stop wearing it altogether but some of the hooks are looking worn and I'm not buying another vest.

This has turned into an essay on compression vests so thanks for reading it and I hope there is something useful in it. Webster.
