May I just start by saying how very helpful I have found this board - reading your comments has actually given me courage to take the plunge.

I am due to be operated on by Karidis in late September. I live on my own in the South West and plan to make the trip back home on the same day (about 1.5 hr by train). I am the first to be operated on on that day, so there should be plenty of time to recover before the journey back. In the information they provided, they suggest that the patient stays with another adult for the first couple of days after the operation. I have not told anybody about this, and am keen not to. In your experience, would it be too difficult to stay on one's own after the operation?

Any tips/advice very greatly appreciated.

The train journey back could be really rough..... the anesthetic  and painkillers they give you while under can make you really doped up and easily distracted for quite some time after the operation.  I mean in my experience of having surgery the nurses will not discharge you unless someone is escorting you home, I don't know if Karidis operates in the same way or not?

After the operation you can feel quite sleepy/sick/drunk and you may not think clearly at all.... IMO it would be much better to book a B&B/Hotel room close to the hospital to stop overnight before going home the next day - either that or take someone with you.

Once you are home I would imagine you will be fine. -  Just don't go using the oven or other potential hazards for 48hrs or so.... When still doped up on anesthetic  it is easy to lose concentration and forget about something or have an accident.
