getting an Endo appt. a pain?

hey eveyone.
did anyone else have difficulty scheduling an appt. with an endocrinologist? i just called and they said i need a referral from a primary care doctor who has done prev. lab work and is referring me to a specialist because the lab work revealed an issue. I havent had any lab work since I was in a hospital so Im not sure how to get a referral. Do i just make an appt. with a primary care doc and tell him what i need the referral for? can the surgeon do it? thanks.
