I was wondering what model numbers have people tried here?

I've tried the 993 wife beater type shirt most recently. It's pretty good, though very hard to take off from your head, and I had to get the large though my measurements said to get medium.

I'm thinking about getting a crew t-shirt type compression shirt next, since that's usually the type of t-shirt I hear under my clothes. Any recommendations?

If you are talking about the 998 when you say crew neck undershirt then I say good choice.  I use the 978 v-neck undershirt and it works great.  It's firm but not too tight.  Also, I found the best way to take it off is to cross your arms and take it off from the bottom up.
