How specialised should a surgeon be for gyno related corrections.

I have found a very experienced surgeon at one of the highest rated clinics in the Netherlands where I am from. The Dr./surgeon has over 25 years experience in cosmetic surgery and is also a Dr./surgeon for various major Dutch hospitals. He does various types of cosmetic surgery including various lypo related corrections, women breast, eye, face, body corrections you name it. I asked him how often he carries out the male breast correction (removal of gland + some minor fat removal using vaser/lypo). His answer was once or twice a month. They do not seem to get tons of request for this procedure albeit allot more then a few years ago.  He also said that the male breast correction was a highly standard procedure for him. 

Due to there privacy policy I did not get to see pictures of his work, the clinic did say the would contact some of his "patients" that had the procedure done by him in the past and ask permission to disclose there foto's to me, so I could judge his work for myself.

Also he sounded very knowledgeable informed me about leaving some glad over to prevent the nipple crater etc and some people I met in the waiting room regarded him very high.

How this experience info compare with the surgeons you have met or have experience with? Would or did you go with a surgeon that does gyno surgery as his/her specialisme (4/5 operations a week) or with a very experinced Dr./surgeon that does muliple different cosmetic procedures and also does one or two gyno corrections a month?

Also is it common for you not to get to see before/after pics of the surgeons work during a consult?

Think of the surgeon as an artist.

Would you go to someone to have a portrait painted if that person only picked up a paint brush a couple of times a month?

Such a skill requires a lot of practice. 

I think you would be wise to try and find someone with more experience in this specific kind of surgery.

As to the photos, I'd wager that the Dr. could easily have obtained a waiver in advance to use photos. Especially so if the faces are not in the photographs.

Pictures from multiple angles can be a very valuable tool to better understand a surgeon's skills.  Gynecomastia surgery is an art form.  Selecting a surgeon without seeing what they can sculpt is like buying a painting without seeing what that artist offers.  That is why I have places so many before and after photographs and movies on my website.  That way patients can take their time and see many, many examples of what I offer while they are relaxing at home or on their computers.  Pictures books in the office can only be seen while there.  Having the opportunity to concentrate and take your time viewing images before coming to see the doctor and after having left the office permits my patients to concentrate on the details of patient education for the problem and surgery.

I too have patients who request that their images not be shown for privacy. However, a surgeon with a large volume of patients should be able to demonstrate what they offer.  The vast majority of my patients permit me to share their experiences.  I have so many images that I could add to my web site.  The problem is time and navigation: finding even more photos can be difficult.  That is why I instead try to put up many different types of this problem and sculpture solutions.

I don't see anything wrong with once or twice a month in terms of experience...... my main concern would be the lack of before and after images to view.    It is perfectly possible for surgeons to keep the images of gynecomastia free of identifying features for privacy reasons, so I find it hard to believe that they wont show you examples of his previous work because of 'privacy concerns'.  That doesn't sound right to me.

The surgeon I went with was doing at least 1 gyne op a week and had plenty of photos....also all the photos he took of my gyne were all shots where my face was not in the image, so privacy is not an issue should those images get shown to future patients of his.

I would insist on seeing some before & afters and if they decline then shop around for another surgeon you like.

Agree with Kingboob.  Most surgeons who do a substantial amount of gyne surgery would have plenty of photos to show.  And most doctors who take photos of gyne patients do so from the neck down -- so no face is shown.

I agree allot with the advice given. My gut feeling told me approximately the same. Before and after pics of the surgeons work is a must in my opinion too. How else would a client be able to base an opinion on how competent a surgeon is without them?  I have found another surgeon through this site also located in the Netherlands that is specialized in male/women breast surgery and I get the impression he does allot of gyno corrections too. I shall ask if he is willing to demonstrate his work with before/after pics before I make an appointment for a consult. If not that's EURO 175,- saved on consult fee.
