Can you just comment on the healng involved in this procedure? i've read that the injected fat or vessels around the fat can harden significantly and can cause scarring?also, in animation, (possibly as a result of the scarring?) the areas that have been injected do not appear to move naturally? does scarring form around fat?is it the fat itself that hardens? is that just a stage of healing?can it be permanent?

The healing of fat grafting is variable and varies with the doctor's personal technique as well as the vagaries of individual healing.  But assuming there only a minimal amount of the injected fat does not survive, the results are usually soft and natural.  The tissues above the fat move naturally (animation) and once healed, there is no "hardening" of the fat or surrounding vessels.  It is a very good and useful procedure -- but it is technique dependent.  You should consider using a plastic surgeon who is adept at it.

I know you cannot give me specifics at all, but what sort of ball-park figure might one expect to pay for a graft, with donated fat from lower abs, to chest?

(right pec, lower quadrant toward the middle of the chest, about 1.5inches square.probably needing between 20-35ml of fat?)

also, is this a procedure that needs fancy equpment to clean the fat? or can a surgeon do it in his consultation room with just a bed and syringe and equpiment he could carry in his case? (i ask because the surgery is MILES away from the consultation offices, so if it could be done in the consult room, that would be great!)..by the way, i'm asking your opinion as my surgeon is not the most talkative guy,nor is he easy to reach, so your answers will be much appreciated.)

Very rough guess is between $1500 to $2500.

This procedure must be done in a real operating room under sterile conditions, etc.  It is not something that should be done in a consult room.

many thanks doc. Is this a procedure that you have had a lot of practice/success with..in particular with grafting to the chest? You said it would be a good idea to choose a doc who is an expert in this arena.. I know you are an expert at the gynecomastia removal surgery, but would you consider yourself to be an expert at this particular procedure? I'm weighing up my options, and with cost amongst other things, I may seriously consider flying out to the U.S to have this done if things don't improve.

Also, would I need to stay in hospital for a while after procedure? would I need a compression garrment?(if so, for how long).. How long after procedure before I could fly back home (u.K)? and will I be sore/immobile for days/weeks afterwards (getting back to work, light lifting etc.)?

I have done about 20 cases of fat grafting specifically to the chest area (19 of those cases were other doctor's results).  It is not something I do often because I am extremely careful when I do my own surgery so that I don't have a problem such as this.

Yes, you would need a compression garment for about two weeks.  You could probably fly home within several days after the surgery.  I would recommend at least 3 weeks of nothing physically strenuous.  Return to sedentary type activities?  3-4 days.

YOU NEED STERILE ROOM for the op
PLUS its not an easy op.

ANy time a Doc opens you up its very tricky, many things can go wrong. Somethings are eaiser for the docs than otehrs, but all procedures in my mind are hard When they cut you open.
