General or local anesthesia?

For a procedure that includes both lipo and tissue extraction, does it matter if you're awake?  I have gotten conflicting opinions from specialists.  Some say due to the stress on the body during the lipo part, you have to be under general anesthesia.  Others say, local is fine.  Does it matter?  Any advice?

I had local+sedation 2 months ago and it was fine. Really no problems at all. Even fell asleep at one point.

I would allow the surgeon and anesthesiologist decide that.
