I take care of a number of the athletes at Northwestern and elsewhere  and the team doctor several years ago looked into muscle supplements . He found that almost all of the supplements caused long term problems, one of the few exceptions was creatine. Creatine can result in cramping so stay hydrated and although I do not have a problem with it I would check with your surgeon.

Creatine is not an issue peri-operatively.  One issue that can cause concern if you have any laboratory testing pre-operatively is that you creatinine, a measure of kidney function, may be elevated when you're taking creatine, and your doctor may worry that you have a kidney problem if he or she is not aware that you're using the supplement.

Common supplements that should be avoided pre-operatively are fish oil and flaxseed oil, and any fat burners, which often contain an aspirin-like compound (or aspirin itself).
