I'm doing the exact same thing, and I live at home. Nobody is going to know. You will have to be a bit clandestine but so be it.

Sure, I would make sure you get a consultation earlier rather than later though, so that you can coincide the surgery for the first few days that your folks are away. That way you should get the max possible recovery time before they're back.

A month is plenty of time to be back to doing normal things and acting normal in front of your parents ... if anything, all you need is 2 weeks realistically.

Agreed.  I have roommates and I didn't tell them.  Even better if your parents are not going to be home, but make sure you do it right.  That means pick a specialist, go wherever he/she is, pay whatever it takes and follow instructions.  Don't take shortcuts because you live at home or don't have money.

How did you feel physically after the surgery - were you drowsy and fucked up? If so, did you have anyone with you at all to bring you home?

No, I actually felt great right after the surgery.  Sore, but definitely alert.  The anesthesia wore off pretty quickly after I came to.  BUT, most surgeons will require that you get discharged to someone for liability reasons.  If something happens to you right after the surgery, they will probably get sued.

Damn it! I'm conflicted as hell about this. I want to go straight home - it's a mere hour on a plane, and the metro to the airport is literally seconds away from the hospital. Instead, people on this forum have been recommending that I go to a hotel after.

So I would have to pay more money (money I can't afford as it is) by changing my flight details, staying in a hotel, and getting taxis to and fro the hospital and hotel.

There will be no one there to discharge me, so.... I'll have to convince them I'm fine.
