gyne as a result of steroid use in pediatric cancer patient

Hi

My son had cancer when he was 7. A very necessary and important part of the treatment is the administration of steroids. Now, cancer free and a month away from his 18th birthday, I have taken it upon myself to research into his current situation--- gynecomastia.

Although i have just begun my research, i have learned that steriods can cause this affliction. Is there any known connection between his treatment with dexamethasone, and gynecomastia?

Dont get me wrong- i am truly grateful his treatment has cured his cancer. but now, i would like to deal with this issue. i see how difficult it is for a male to cope with this, and i am glad there seems to be so much information and support on the web.... now to sift through it all....

i am very glad he has options.
 
is there a known link between the two, or can anyone help me establish if there is. It would help prepare other children and bring awareness to both the affliction and treatment.

Now, I'm only 16 years old, so I'm not sure about a direct correlation with that sppecific drug and gyne. But there IS a correlation between steroids and gyne, so that most likely caused his gyne.

You should do some research on the surgery and find a well qualified surgeon. Good luck!

The drug Desamethasone is a Corticosteroid which is different from the Anabolic Steroids which can cause Gynecomastia.

You mentioned that your son was 7 years old when treated for cancer. At what age did the gynecomastia become evident? If it was well after his time of treatment the chances are that there is not a direct connection between the two.

No, I'm not a Doctor.  But be patient, we have several Doctors having extensive experience with Gynecomastia who are sure to weigh in on this issue.

Corticosteroids can also possibly cause Gynecomastia. Corticosteroids can decrease gonad function, and therefore increase the estrogen:testosterone ratio in the body.

Whether or not gynecomastia during puberty can be caused by treatment as a young child is not proven by science. That is not to say that it is out of the question; it's just that your particular situation is so unique that it has not been studied (and I looked- perhaps I have overlooked a study, though). I wish I could be more help.

Would strongly suggest you consult with an endocrinologist, who is familiar with all the side effects of corticosteroids and also knowledgeable about gynecomastia.  I think you would get the best answer from that specialist.
