Gynecomastia is defined as any visable or palpable enlargement of the breast in a male.

With a definition that broad, it is among the most common conditions of men and statistically normal.

There are no signs or symptoms in the usual sense, but gynecomastia itself can be an important symptom of several serious diseases.

Look up the "Tanner Scale" of breast development.  Male breasts usually only grow to the earlier stages of that scale.

There is much made of the difference between true and pseudo gynecomastia.  Or, Gland vs Fat. Since the effect is not physical but psychological; and the effect is the same either way;  This arguement proves to be baseless.

Sometimes even a skilled surgeon cannot be sure what is there until after the incision is made.  The fat which would be expected to be soft, could be fibrous and firm; while the gland which would be expected to be firm, could be soft.

Anyone who tells you that they can tell the difference between gland and fat from a photograph would probably lie about other things too.

The simple truth is that breasts are usually both fat and gland.

Exactly right Paw Paw.

Also glandular gynecomastia does not have to be a glandular mass (something that often appears as a rubber disc like material under the areolas) but can be diffuse and mixed up in and around the fat.

The latter makes it almost impossible to 100% say whether gynecomastia is fat or glandular.

And in any event the end result is often irrelevant as you correctly point out (except where pseudo gynecomastia is blatantly caused by excess weight) as it is impossible to localize fat lose from the chest.

In my case I had significant gynecomastia, with the operation taking 3 hours.  I had an ultrasound scan that said it was supposedly pseudo gynecomastia.

Which was complete rubbish because my gynecomastia increased dramatically on testosterone replacement therapy; because my estradiol level went through the roof (it was medicated too late).

Given that the only way estradiol can affect breast tissue is via glandular increase (estradiol cannot increase fat) even the scan I had was shown to be complete bunkum.

My surgeon said I had diffuse glandular gynecomastia.

So not even an ultrasound can be relied upon to differentiate between fat and gland.

But hey u8ballin, asking what the signs of gynecomastia is like asking what the signs of a big nose are  :D

If you look like you have a pair of breasts, you have gynecomastia.  Simply if rather crudely put, if you don't have a pair of titts or a growth resembling such then you don't have it.

It is very obvious to most people that have it, very few people who really have it have to ask that question.

u8balli I would suspect most people asking that question either don't have any gynecomastia but are self conscious/ have Body Dysmophic Disorder or have minor gynecomastia.

But post your pics and see what people think and let them help you out, as you maybe an exception to the rule and it is better not to prejudge especially without having seen your situation.
