Thorough Fielding Review and Questions- Dec 20, 2006

Hello all. Today I underwent bilateral gynecomastia excision with Dr Fielding. I will be writing a review that future patients can use to know what to expect. I had no pain at all after the surgery or when the anaesthesist injected the intravenous, in fact it was like a flash, i woke up after i went down and was told that the surgery was over. I was then wheeled to the paediatric surgery daycare, where I was told that I was going to be analyzed and meet with Fielding. So far everything had been a positive experience, minus the problem with the scheduling of Fielding himself. I was told to arrive at the hospital at 6 only to find myself waiting in a fisher price high chair  for over 2 hours before i could even be registered by a nurse, by i did not mind. Overall i spent from 6am to 6pm in the hospital.

All downhill from here...

I was ensured by several nurses that I would get post-op visit from Fielding. After being monitored for serveral hours i was taken off support and told i could go home when Fielding showed. The problem was Fielding never showed, even after several calls for him. This upset me and a fellow patient who had undergone the surgery, as he was leaking fluids from his vest, but I was not. Both of us were not told the proper procedures to undertake for the two weeks before our appointments with Fielding, and the nurses were unable to assist.

So here I am now typing, with an uncomfortable bandage that is not even a vest and told to keep on for two weeks . The question I was asking myself is "what the He ll is fielding doing, after any surgery it is vital that you visit your patient and tell them how to take care of yourself.

Not knowing what to do I came to the only place for support, which is you guys. Please tell me anything I should be aware of and when i can take of this bandage, if Fielding met with you post-op, do i have the right to feel angered and upset, and should i call his office tomorrow?

  This is just the stuff I want to hear about when I just had a consult and a date for surgery. I'm hoping for the best. Also other things like other people not being satisfied, or not enough taken out. I hope this stuff doesn't happen most of the time.

Hey, on the day of my surgery, the nurses told me Dr. F would visit me in the evening. He didn't visit me until the next morning. I think there's miscommunication between Dr. F and the nurses.

I'm assuming you're posting from a portable device at the hospital, because the hospital shouldn't let you out until tomorrow morning. As for procedure, this is what I was told:

-all the crap you're wearing (bandages, vests, etc.) have to stay on for a week, continuously. You can't shower during that time. If you take the vest off for cleaning, make sure you put another one on right away, or at least a tensor bandage (btw, make sure you grab 2 or 3 tensor bandages before you leave the hospital.) Dr. F will probably schedule an appointment with you, at the hospital, at the one-week point. After my surgery, my vest and bandages were blood-soaked. You can wash the vest, but not the sponges and other crap they plastered on you. As gross as it may sound, I had to continue wearing all that blood-stained stuff for a week.

-after the first week, you can take off the sponges on your chest (actually, Dr. F will take them off for you), and start taking showers; other than when you're in the shower, you need to wear the vest continuously for 2 more weeks.

- you can't lift weights for 3 weeks

-you can't do cardio for 2 weeks

Otherwise, there isn't much to know. Hope this helps.

Nope, I am typing comfortably from my gome computer. I was clear to go from 1pm. The miscommunication between the nurses and Fielding and I gives me unsettling thoughts. I just pray he did a good job as i put all my trust in him. From this board everyone seems to praise him, but so far my experience has been a negative and frustrating one.

It's no big deal not seeing Dr Fielding the day of you're surgery as long as the staff gives you the right informations. I saw him on the friday since the nurses scheduled it for me.

So like Dadadaboom said, keep the foams 1 week, remove it and keep the vest for 2 more weeks. Normally, you should see some swellings and you'll see you're old boobs appearing again....

Fielding told me it would take between 3 and 12 months before I see the final result. So far I,m 5 weeks after surgery and I would say that I'm at 20-25 % but I hope it will improve in the next months.

JCF did not visit me in the recovery ward either. It didn't bother me tho, as I assumed that if he didn't need to talk with me, then surgery must have gone well...   

I did see JCF on day 6 post-op so that he could check me over and make sure that everything was healing the way it should.

The bandage slipped down while i was sleeping last night to the point where i could see the white bandaging around the chest area so i pulled it back up. This is why i wish i was supplied with a vest. Also, when will it be safe to take off the tensor for a few minutes because my post op visit isnt for 2 weeks.

Hey,

Fielding saw me the next day.  I wasnt sure if he was or not.  Basically he came in, and looked at things for a minute, and said everything looks fine.  I wouldnt worry too much about it.  There isnt much that can be down right now but hope that the results turn out okay.

I hope everything works out.  Keep us posted, and post pictures if you have/feel comfortable with doing that.

I called Fielding's office the day after surgery and his secretary told me to wait 6-7 days before removing the tensor, then take off the pads underneath, and replace the tensor. I am now satisfied with knowing what to do, but it will be a long two weeks before I see and am able to take it off. It is already driving me crazy. She also apologized for him not being able to see us after post-op, he had a busy day.

Taking the tensor and pads off for a short time, prolly will not hurt your recovery process. Take it off, have a 'peek', have a shower and put a fresh tensor with pads back on after your shower. In my opinion (not an MD here tho), having to wear the bandage 24/7 for two weeks is BS. The first 2-3 days post-op sure, do not remove the wrap. However, you need to shower, so how is taking it off (after the first 2-3 days) for 15-20 minutes gonna hurt?

I had the tensor and pads removed on Tuesday and it appears to be coming back. It looks the same as before pretty much. I don't know if it's swelling because it behaves as it did before, a puffy nipple normal, and contracts when cold or pinched, so what should I do?

Same as me, you'll have to wait to see if it changes. Fielding said 3 to 12 months before the final results.

Here's something I,ve found about a poster who had a surgery with Fielding and had to wait for months to see the swelling subsides.

I think we all have to be patient but if you feel something is anormal you should call him. But remember that swelling is normal and that only a few lucky guys will have a very quick healing.

Thanks for your input. How far along are you since surgery and how much swelling did you have at first and have now?

I had my surgery 1 month before you did. It still lools like I have gyno, especially on my left side (puffy nip).
