The numbness is probably from the position you arms were in during the surgery and not a result directly from the surgery. This type of numbness does not happen a lot but is not uncommon. It should improve and become normal over the next couple of weeks. Be patient.

It is very unusual to have hand and finger swelling after surgery. If you recently had surgery contact your surgeon. Tell the surgeon if the swelling is on one side or both sides.Also let the surgeon know if the swelling is limited to the hand or the arm is involved.If the swelling is just the hand was the iv placed in the same hand?
