Swelling or something else?

There is a lot of discussion about post-op swelling.  I am 4 weeks post-op myself and have some concerns as to what I am perceiving as "excess" is swelling, or, as I fear- remaining fat with some redundant skin.  Is there a rule of thumb as to how to tell what is swelling and what isn't?
